Quality product that came quickly, but was below weight
I still remember the delicious island fries we had in the Cook Islands, which were a wide mix of tubers including taro. Ever since I've been wanting to try recreating this at home. So far, I'm not there yet. I'm grading this based on the taro product I received, not our experience cooking and eating it. Yet, the high cost of these certainly makes value a relevant consideration. Product appears to be Eddoe (C. esculenta var. antiquorum) variety, perhaps from the Caribbean. I found the flesh to be uniform white, and taste to be neutral, definitely not sweet. I would compare it to potato, but flavor and texture wasn't quite as nice, at least for the ways we cooked it. Since I haven't cooked this product before I did a test comparing it to red and sweet potatoes, baking and frying thin slices and fries of each in light olive oil and lightly salted. I wasn't happy with the thin taro slices (hard, not crispy), but found taro fries were comparable if not overcooked. Family opinion was that they preferred the taste and texture of the red and sweet potato fries vs. the rather bland flavor of the taro. I found that cooking the taro to the point of browning as I would potato was creating something dry and hard, which I would call overcooked and undesirable. The box I received came quickly and all items were fresh and uniform. It contained 1.65 lbs of taro vs. advertised 2 lbs. That would make this box of taro almost $10/lb. When comparing this to cost of potatoes in the local stores, that's 4-5x more. Perhaps there are cases where this taro is more desirable than potatoes, or better ways to cook and season to at least break even with potatoes, but I don't know what those are, and the high premium in cost makes me lose interest in trying.
