This is a great CD.
Here, Linda Ronstadt performs some classic Mexican folk songs, but, again, as in her Frenesi CD, she performs the songs exactly as they should be sung. She does a couple of songs that I had never heard, plus she does versions that few modern singers take on any more, I suppose because of the technical difficulties. Despite the fact that these are folk or traditional songs, they can be very technically demanding for any singer, But she does them justice. This is a great CD.

Excellent Selection of Classic Mexican Tunes
I have been enjoying this CD for 20 years and was in fear of it wearing out. I was so happy when this remastered version was issued so I can have a replacement standing by. Every song is great; there is'nt one I would want to leave out. So many albums I can't say that about. My husband, who doesn't know a word of Spanish, enjoys it as much as I do. We play this during supper at home on taco night or whenever we just want to unwind. The guitar and mariachi backup on this is great but what makes it special is Linda Ronstadt's voice, always a joy to listen to.

A wonderful collection. Great material, beautifully done. It wears well.
I had "Canciones de Mi Padre" for years and knew it backwards and forwards before I discovered this collection. Some of the arrangements are simpler, but no doubt, this record is a treasure. As always, Linda's voice is amazing and the production overall is just beautiful.

I always was a fool for a pretty face, but never before have I fallen in ...
I always was a fool for a pretty face, but never before have I fallen in love with a voice, until I heard this series of Mexican jalapeños by Linda Ronstadt. She would have brought the house down as an opera great, as well as her chosen genres. Has any singer ever before put as much feeling into as simple a word as “Paloma”? Buy and enjoy, but guard your heart....

Dona y Maestra Linda Ronstadt
La Maestra Linda Ronstadt cannot be replaced. So sorry about her MS which has impaired her singing voice. - but I can still hear her singing the laments and happy moments of our Hispanic and Indian ancestors

Good CD bad case.
The CD was good I enjoyed listening to it though my Spanish is poor and getting worse from lack of use. The case was broken, the cover fell off when the package was opened, fortunately I had spare cases.

Authentic Mexican
Original Review 9 March 2005I am not a Mexican, but I have circulated for years in the Mexican parts of Los Angeles, and I have travelled throughout Mexico, enjoying the native musicians on street corners and in parks and cafes. I have always wondered about those who praise Lola Beltran as the "great" Mexican singer. She sounds too urbane and too international to me--in the manner of Catarina Valente. I always thought the real spirit of Mexican music was better represented by such as Las Hermanas de Alba. And now Linda Ronstadt carries on the true Mexican tradition in her later work. Whatever else she may have sung in her career, I find in Linda's Mexican singing the authentic flavor of Old Mexico.Update 17 May 2006Last night as I was browsing the reviews of this record, I got curious about the various comparisons to Lola Beltran. Not having listened to Lola for quite some time, I went through a stack of stuff from both Linda and Lola to refresh my ear.My conclusion. Lola is good, but Linda is better.Linda has a much broader emotional range. With all of her musical excelence, Lola has a dreadful sameness from song to song--even songs which should be handled quite differently. For example, It is quite disconcerting to hear Lola back to back on "Ya No" and "Me equivoque contigo"--songs which should be very different in emotional tone sound all too similar. As it happens, I heard the latter song on the radio a few days ago by a male artist. His rendition shoots Lola's down the drain.By contrast, Linda's emotional range is both subtle and immense. For example, from her "Tata Dios," which wrenches me to tears every time I hear it, to the mock seriousness of her "El toro relajo," which is always worth a good laugh. After reviewing a batch of Lola's work this morning, I can't imagine her ever having such an effect on me. Lola still strikes me as a city person trying to sing country. Whatever else Linda may have done in her life, she somehow manages to dig her toes into the true country soil of Old Mexico.Viva Linda!

Linda is amazing!!
I am very happy I purchased this album, I am blown away with the emotion Linda gives when she is singing these songs, I don't see why the negative comments, the notes she hits on these songs made my jaw drop. Wanna hear authentic Mexican songs that are sung beautifully by Linda Ronstadt? I would suggest you get this album it is simply amazing.Favorite songs on this album1. Tata Dios (Father God)2. El Toro Relajo (The Troublesome Bull)3. Siempre Hace Frio (Always Cold)4. El Crucifijo de Piedra5. El Gustito6. Palomita de Ojos Negros

If not understanding the words bothers you, learn Spanish
The idea to do an album of Mexican songs came to Linda Ronstadt in a dream, Canciones de mi Padre being released in 1987, followed by Mas Canciones four years later. Both albums sound authentic, using largely traditional instrumentation as well as players and Ms Ronstadt's fabulous vocals, more often used for country rock songs, evocative of traditional folk gatherings. Don't worrry about not understanding Spanish. Make these two albums the first played at your next themed party. If the words DO bother you, learn Spanish!

Good album and as good if not better than her first Spanish speaking album
One of the great singers of rock and country makes a second Spanish album, The first was good. This is at least as good. One might not understand the lyrics but the ha re sung with such passion and skill, it matters not, a very enjoyable album of some wonderful Mexican songs. A translation of the lyrics is within but I did not.use them.......the music is just worth list sing to.

Lovely Linda
I was pleasantly surprised when I heard one of the songs on this album on our local radio station. Could not believe she sings in spanish as well. After the Blue Bayou Album, this is as good.
