The Regiment: The Real Story of the SAS

Good History
As far as I can tell this book is an accurate history of the Special Air Service. It's difficult to find valid or accurate information about special forces units but the history of SAS in this book cooresponds to other accounts I've read. The only shortcoming is that the history stops at the end of the first gulf war and I wish there was more information about more recent operations (security allowing).

Breathtaking and captivating
I have come upon this book after reading the "Phantom Major" by Virginia Cowles. That work describes the beginning of SAS in the 1941-1942 period, whereas "The Regiment" provides a much wider overview of SAS history. Being a documentary this book is quite far away from a dry narration of events and recollections of participants of these events. On the contrary, the story is lively and takes the reader into the deserts of Sahara, woods of Morvan and jungles of Malaya. Definitely worth reading!

Probably the best source of the SAS out there
This is probably the best source you can find on the amplified history of the sas, brutally honest and very well detailed, the book is very well worth the buy

Good coverage
This was a good comprehensive coverage of a topic that is, understandably, difficult to penetrate. I'd recommend it to all who might be interested in this general subject. Don't expect polished, flowing prose...just good, interesting history and background.

Hmmm
The style of prose was very limited and after awhile became rather tedious. As far as the history of the SAS it seemed to be well researched and gave me the information I was seeking

Worth A Read.
Well worth a read, however there is much 'poetic licence' mixed with fact a reality. 😎

Poorly written
The historical narrative is good but whenever describing combat scenes the author lapses into 2 and 3 word sentences and makes up stupid words like trocked, shished, wonked, spiritzed and describes aircraft as "truckling overhead" amongst many others. If the combat descriptions (and there are many) had been written as well as the rest of the book it would have been a good read - but it is not and the style turns a very serious subject into a frustrating farce.

Totally brilliant.
Mike Asher has written a truly fascinating book about the history of the Regiment. Full of factual information.Like all of Michael's books they it's hard to put down, as you want to keep reading.Well researched and put together.Sadly not all members who served in the Regiment get a mention. However to do so the book would be triple the size to get everybody's contribution included.

The truth about a Regiment that is sometimes shrouded in myth.
Well written and researched exploding the the myths that surround this famous group of warriors. Faults an all, a brilliant read.

The whole truth and nothing but the truth.
From the man who brought you 'The Real Bravo Two Zero', Asher, unlike some writers, doesn't apply the horrible old rule 'Why let the truth get in the way of a good story'. His works (I've read them all) appear to be, as far as I've personally researched, devoid of BS. Highly recommended.
