An Introduction to Art

This is a beautiful book - and a brilliant introduction to art and the study of art. Harrison has a wonderful writing style which engages the reader from the outset. He must have been a wondeful teacher.

I had the privilege of encountering Charles Harrison when I studied Art History as an undergraduate through the Open University 2004-2006. This book, began when he received a prognosis of cancer, was written in the final two years of his life. It is a work matured by years of considering art, talking about art with students, colleagues and friends, and teaching students how to value it, not in monetary or financial terms but in how to understand it as its first makers or commissioners may have understood it. It is a work that will change the way you view art and deepen your appreciation of its intentions. Charles' distinctive voice and way of writing gives the book a fluid and graceful tone. Enthusiastic to the end, this book carries on the work of a passionate and erudite art historian. Thank you, Charles!
