Digital Electronics: A Practical Approach

Excellent Practical Introduction to Digital Devices and Circuits
Kleitz's Digital Electronics is an excellent textbook for classroom use, or for learning the basics of digital circuits on your own. Each section is very well organized with questions and exercises that relate directly to real world problems using real IC's and devices. It also makes frequent use of Multisim simulations which are a faster, cheaper alternative to using breadboards and expensive analysis instruments to explore device configurations and troubleshooting techniques. Many of the devices he uses for examples are out of date, but still somewhat in use. Still, the concepts they illustrate are sound. (For example running off 1.2V rather than 5V, and being surface mount devices rather than DIPS isn't too important while learning how gates and flip-flops work.) He also describes FPGA's and CPLD's and includes some exercises in working with them using HDL.Perhaps most valuable, every chapter includes exercises in interpreting real data sheets and schematics for a watchdog timer, HC11D0 master board, or 4096 control card. In this fast paced world of constantly changing electronic devices, technicians and engineers both need to know how to learn about the characteristics of digital circuits that they've never seen before -- whether they're well documented or not.

A keeper
Nice reference book to keep once class is done. I have gone back to this book many times after graduation and the examples are always a welcome, clear and complete refresher. If you have this book for a class, keep it for your library once you are done.

School
This book I needed for school and Amazon is always a great place to buy books for school at a bit cheaper price than you will find out the bookstore. Needless to say I passed the class and I still have this book since I am an engineer decided to keep all my engineering books.

digital electronics hard cover
good coverage of digital IC's and how they are used. microcontrollers are also covered some. timers are notcovered much as far as timer IC's go. alot of examples and problems with answers.

Great for Introduction to Digital Electronics
I purchased this book for an online class at community college. The class is actually "taught" by the writer of this textbook, which i thought was pretty cool. Although i had access to the author of the textbook, i did not need to utilize his knowledge because the text is written so well. I was able to basically teach myself and do very well in the class with this textbook and the included software. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about digital electronics, whether they want to teach themselves or for a class (that is not to say you should purchase this instead of the text required for a class).

Well written text book.
This digital electronics book is a thoughtful, well written text book. The illustrations are helpful and important as a tool to learn the material. There is a CD ROM resource that further supports the material in the text. Good author, good book.
