How to Close the Compass and Other Remarks
I, like some other reviewers, had difficulty closing this compass. Squeeze the compass arms together before turning the screw lock. Aside: opening the compass with screw lock has not been difficult for me. Explanation: the compass is set open by a spring at the top. Simply turning the screw lock requires a great deal of effort to close the compass because of the spring resisting it. But to the average human grip should not be difficult to close. Downside: the it's hard to get a very precise measurement by closing the compass, because you need to squeeze the arms together with your hand in order to close it easily. To get an precise point, you can try closing it to smaller than the target radius, then turning the screw lock so that it opens. Other downsides: the compass is elegant and small, but actually for heavy duty applications. It does not have a fine pin, like many other compasses, and leaves a larger whole in the paper than you might be accustomed to. Upside: it's a very nice object, affordable, and seems durable, although I have not used it for long enough to say. It's also compact and easy to travel with. Because the point isn't super fine, it's less likely to poke a hole in my bag. Other remarks: the compass seemed slightly misaligned at first but after using it a bit and adding some machine oil I cannot recreate the misalignment I thought that I initially saw. When closed, it appears perfectly aligned.

Sturdy and stable compass
I use this for many things, from marking dovetails to drawing curves for classic furniture. It is sturdy and stable, so it does not flex while drawing. This compass provides for very true arcs and circles. It feels good in the hand and gives me confidence that what I am drawing will be good and accurate.

Slips from center extremely hard to close
The product feels heavy-duty in your hand, I like that. It's easy to change drawing apparatus, I like that. To turn the wheel to crank to small circle can be painful with old hands like mine. You can squeeze the compass then twist but I feel like the machine itself could be better lubricated.

Nice solid tool! Only issue, can't make small enough circle the way pencil mounts

It does what it’s supposed to do, looking at some of the other reviews I suspect that it’s not been used properly. Squeeze the thing to desired circumference/diameter, and then tighten up the nut without resistance. Job done.
