A worthy addition to your data viz bookshelf
If your shelf is lined with books on data viz, this is a worthy addition that covers tons of general best practices for data viz with select examples. If you work specifically in the healthcare world and don't consider yourself a data viz expert, definitely read this cover to cover as it is an excellent primer on how display data and avoid the usual pitfalls. The focus is on healthcare data and all the examples address that subject, but there is not too much that is *specific to healthcare in my opinion. Good charting is good charting. Still, as someone who does work with and visualize healthcare data often, I did pick up some good tips here and there as well as reminders. My only quibble would be that I wished there were even more examples included so the book could be used more for inspiration seeing what does really work. Oh, and while I appreciated the "Graphs and Charts to Never Use or Use with Caution" chapter, there might have been a few overgeneralization here without any of the exception examples. All in all, a really nice reference!

Make This Book Your Starting Point
If you're involved in healthcare analytics and you're thinking of learning either Power BI or Tableau, I strongly recommend that you read this book first. You'll get the foundations of how to create effective visuals for your dashboards and reports. You'll also get many good ideas about how to lead conversations and meetings with non-technical staff in order to harvest their knowledge. Knowing how to use a reporting tool is only half the battle. The key is knowing how to make visuals that your audience will engage with and respond to, and this book will help you get there.

Make your healthcare data displays tell an impactful story!
As a professor of doctoral students, it is clear they often struggle with how to present data for a variety of different audiences. The key is to understand your audience and their need for information. By looking at different options and seeing choices that can be understood by a variety of individuals, you can achieve dramatic presentations. Rowell shows different displays side by side and offers display tips. The book is brimming with wonderful suggestions and leaves you wanting even more. This book will be a welcome addition for anyone dealing healthcare data.

Excellent Guide and Resource
What I love about this book is that is provides a framework for gathering requirements and developing an approach to get the right data in front of the right viewer. I also really like the chapter that provides the rationale about why some graphs and charts don’t work with associated bullet points I can easily share to support the correct choice of charts. I am glad to see a chapter about accessibility which is very important and often overlooked. I recommend this book!
