Victorian Fashions Coloring Book: A Dual-Language Book

Another fantastic book from Dover. I have great joy in painting these and learning about the history of fashion. The only thing I didn't like about it is that as much as Tom Tierney is very good artistically, the dark or black parts are already coloured in black, or the area where you darken is crossed with lines and is very dark, so shading for yourself you cannot do. That is the only downfall. Tom Tierney or Dover should not blacken the black parts nor use dark lines for the darker shading as it ruins the picture. The pictures are both sides of the paper. The paper is good quality, though I have found that the colours will just run or smear on the next page's picture. I have not used paints, I have used F.Castell Polychromos, and limited Derwent Inktense because of the smearing. I use other pencils also, but it still smears. I have had to staple plain paper on one side of the page so the colours don't smear onto the next picture. I have a number of Tom Tierney books now and they are all the same which is something Dover should look at.

This book was a gift for my teenage daughter, she loves it. She's very interested in fashion, so the little explanatory paragraphs about the dresses are nice. This is appropriate for older kids and adults, the pictures are very detailed. The book itself is printed on a nice paper, my daughter prefers colored pencils, don't know how it would work out with markers. I will be getting her some more, she really likes these.

ブライダル、イヴニング、散歩着、部屋着や海浜着など、ヴィクトリア時代を舞台に様々なドレスが豪華に展開されています。４５枚のぬりえに、表紙も合わせて５枚のカラーの手本が載っています。 全部ではありませんが、塗り絵の下に色の指定が記載されています。 ヴィクトリア時代の衣装に興味がある人は、線画とはいえ有用な、かつ値段のお手頃な資料になりましょうから、入手してもよいと思います。ドレス姿の女性に紛れて量は多くないものの、男性や子供の姿も本の中に散見できます。 ただし、タッチが粗くて線が所々掠れていたり、描き殴ったようになっていたりして、色を塗っていて気分が削がれます。日本人の感覚からすればでしょうか、一言で言えば「雑な絵」という印象を受けました。 塗り絵をする人の事を考えて描かれているのかが、疑問です。 これが作者の作風だと言われればそれまでですが、もう少し丁寧な筆使いであったならば、塗っていてもっと楽しかっただろうというのが、正直な感想です。

I really like Tom Tierney`s style and this is a great book. You find fashions from 1830 to 1877, which was the time where Queen Victoria had the greatest influence in fashion. There are wonderful evening dresses, visiting and at-home gowns, even clothes for men and children and many more. The pictures are very good with many details. If you like victorian fashion, this book is a must-have. You learn a lot about colours and style at this era. It`s really great!
