Great sounding classic electric bass
I'm not sure how many stars to give... The delivery was a bit botched, but the bass itself is excellent. Evidently there was a mixup between Austin Bazaar and FedEx. The tracking number was issued at 10:45 one morning., but the package wasn't picked up by FedEx until 5:00 p.m. the next day, resulting in my bass being delivered a day late. The bass was double-boxed. The outer box was immaculate, the inner box (from Yamaha) was pretty torn up, but the bass itself was fine. My bass is a lot darker than the photos on the website, almost black. The lighter sunburst color is really only visible under the strings. I wish that weren't the case, but it's still a pretty instrument. I suppose that it's the luck of the draw, and for an inexpensive instrument, I shouldn't complain too loudly. When it arrived, the strings were so slack that my tuner couldn't register the notes. I tuned it and played for a few minutes, then was called away for an hour. When I got back to it, all the strings were a bit flat. Over the next day or two this continued, with the strings a little less flat each time, so evidently, they'd never been brought up to proper tension. I think that's a good thing, the strings should last me longer. The last couple of days it's stayed in tune, so the tuners weren't slipping. As far as I can tell, the neck is straight and the bass is intonated well. I'm waiting for a gig bag to be delivered, then I'll have it properly set up by a guitar tech. I'm a guitar player who decided to try bass. A couple of years ago, I bought a Rumble 40 amp and an Ibanez Mikro (short scale bass) because its scale length isn't much longer than a guitar. Gig bags, straps, storage racks, and etc. for use with a guitar work well with it and it's inexpensive. I enjoyed playing it, but there was an indefinable something missing from its sound. I decided that I might like to take bass lessons and wanted to learn on a regular size bass, so I spent a couple of weeks researching them before deciding on this one. I've only been playing the Yamaha a few days, but I really like its sounds. I'm 70 years old, and like old music. I don't play slap bass, rap, hip hop, reggae, or etc., so I can't comment on how useful it is for those styles. For 1950s-1970s-style country and pop, its everything I could wish for. Many basses power on an active circuit when you plug in the instrument cable. I'm in the habit of leaving the cable plugged into an instrument when putting it back into the rack, so I didn't want a bass which would drain a battery if I did that. This bass has passive pickups (like the Fender P and J basses) and doesn't even have a compartment for a battery. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it.

Excellent midrange bass!
You can stop looking. If you're ready to graduate from the $150-250 beginner range but don't think you're yet ready to drop a grand on a bass, this is the one. Hell, you don't even really need to drop more on one, this is flexible enough for anything you need. Looked and felt great right out of the box. Only a very minor truss adjustment to correct a little fret buzz and I was off to the races. From this price point on up, you'd be wise to take it to a luthier (most guitar shops will have one on staff) to get it adjusted just to make sure it's in top shape, if you haven't done it yourself. You can learn to adjust (it isn't difficult) but it isn't very expensive to have it done for you, either. The active/passive pickup is a great addition and worth the step up from the 304. Once I started using it, I'm not sure how I was able to do without it for so long. The back of the body has an LED battery warning indicator so you won't be caught flat-footed with a dead battery when you're in active mode. It does automatically switch over to passive when it loses power, though. Don't take the missing fifth star as criticism. I only use five stars for above and beyond. Take the fours as ringing endorsements. To address the categories Amazon asked about: As far as for beginners, you can find less expensive basses in the $150-200 range, this might be a little pricey for someone's first instrument. The TRBX174 at about $229 (they're still widely available as of April 2021) might suit the absolute beginner a little better at a much lower price point. That said, you definitely can't go wrong with this one if the money isn't a concern. Craftsmanship is top notch. This bass is made in Indonesia. I was a little squirrelly, but the construction is top notch and I found nothing to complain about. I couldn't find any obvious flaws, and it looks, feels, and plays great. No cheap construction materials here. It was perfectly tuned and had only minor fret buzz out of the box, something common with any bass. One quick adjustment and we're off. Versatility is the best I've experienced so far. It works great in the basement, studio or stage. I mostly use it for practice and home use, but it's stood up to everything I've thrown at it. I've tried to find limitations but haven't found any. The active/passive option is something I didn't think about when I ordered; I'd never played with it before. But now that I have it it's like adding a fifth gear, I notice its absence when I'm playing any of my other basses. In short: this is your sign that this is the bass for you.

Great Quality for the Money
Came a day early, and definitely lived up to expectations. This bass sounds awesome, and has so many different tonal options. The neck and overall feel of the bass is 👌 I did have to do a slight adjustment and setup out of the box, but I have come to expect that when purchasing instruments online. No QC problems whatsoever. All in all, this is a great looking, feeling, and sounding bass with a TON of versatility.

Great bass for the bucks
Bought this used and I'm very pleased. The bass is awesome, mint as described. Even the strings are new. I raised the action on the fourth through sixth strings because of a slight buzz and now the playability is perfectly. Intonation is perfectly. The guitar is perfect. The only reason I gave this a 4 star is because the specs said it came with a case. It didn't. The guitar was shipped cross-country in the manufacturer's cardboard box. Luckily, and quite shockingly, there was no damage.

Great First Bass; High Quality at a Reasonable Price Point!
My first bass; arrived in excellent condition and plays great! Fit and finish is competitive with my guitars which cost double or more. Only caveat was I didn’t seem to have a battery included for the active pickups. Wasn’t a big deal for me as I had a spare 9v, but just a consideration.

$1000 bass for $400 price!
Plays, sounds, and feels like a bass well over $1000 for a $400 price. Action was perfect right out of the box. Just had to adjust the intonation on the A and D strings a tad, but once I did, it stays in tune. Don’t sleep on the five-way tone selector switch. Each one is unique and sound great.

After years of loving the sounds of the bass guitar in music I finally just had to get into playing it for myself. Did a lot of research and reading, watching reviews and all that, and this Yamaha TRBX174 was my final choice and I could not be happier with it. First thing is I love the style of the body and head, it has a nice clean modern look to it, and I'm happy to have it displayed on it's stand and just looking at it makes me want to pick it up and play. Second the build quality is great, the paint on the body looks amazing, a nice deep metallic blue that the photos don't show off as nice as in person. Neck is full length with 24 frets, a nice smooth satin finish, frets ends were all smooth, no sharp edges at all and a nice smooth fret board. The hardware is good, chrome tuners and bridge and a P/J style set of pickups, two volume and one tone control knobs that feel smooth. I did my own setup after watching some videos, I put on my own new strings right away, a slight truss rod adjustment, lowered the bridge a bit and it's playing and sounding very nice now. For the price this is a great instrument, fine for beginners or anyone really, to get something noticeably better would have cost another $100-200 bucks, and at my skill level this is perfect, a higher end guitar would not make my practicing any easier! No regrets at all with this bass, love the looks, feel, sound and quality, and at this price I'm super happy!
