Who said you have to be in the dark to do astronomy? Turning your telescope to the Sun is fun and educational. Watch the march of giant sunspots, the clouds of glowing vapor in the photosphere, and solar "granulation" detail. But be sure to protect your precious vision with a safe Orion solar filter! Looking at the Sun without one, even for an instant, can permanently damage your eyes. Superior to Mylar These full-aperture optical glass telescope filters deliver superb views of the Sun, without risk to your eyes. While more expensive than Mylar filters, Orion glass solar filters provide better contrast, a more natural yellow-orange color instead of blue, and their glass and aluminum construction is much more durable. They're ideal for photographing the Sun too! The glass elements are machine-polished and triple-coated with an advanced nickel-chromium stainless steel alloy for a scratch-resistant surface. The filter passes only a fraction of the incoming light, rejecting harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation. Each Orion filter is mounted in an aluminum cell that slide-fits over the front of your telescope.

Easily fits my 5 1/2" O.S. Dia. Refractor
Excellent glass solar filter. Fits my Orion 120 ST EQ perfectly. Screws for tightening the fit are plastic or nylon, but they work well and could be replaced easily with brass or steel if I wish. Despite high clouds I made a photo with my iPhone. Not amazing, but it's my first sunspot.

A must-have for any telescope setup.
Great quality filter. I was able to get solar shots with my Canon 7D in no time. Even though this filter is pretty much opaque, I still needed a shutter speed faster than 1/8000th of a second. This is a must-have for any telescope setup. You read more about my setup with full resolution sample shots and find answers to any most questions at my blog link below:http://shutterwarrior.com/2014/07/05/astrophotography-solar-observation/Don't forget to buy a matching filter for your spotting scope or you will not be able to align your scope by direct sight. I had to use my hand or a piece of paper behind the spotting scope to center the sun.Cheers

Solar telescope filter keeps you from going blind.
This is a glass filter, apparently silvered on both sides. If you hold it up to the sun, the disc is very dim. Apparently just what you need. I use it with my 5" Celestron. The metal collar fits perfectly on that scope, with 3 plastic setscrews to securely hold it in place. One problem is that when yu look in the eyepiece, the Sun is haitting you in the side of the face. I'm building a foam-core baffle to slip over the scope tube to prevent this. Note that this lets you see surface phenomenon, but not flares. That's a different filter - something else to buy from Amazon.

I bought this because it was all I could find to shoot the 8/21/17 solar eclipse. I was not disappointed. I adapted it to my 400mm lens with some rubber bands and gasket material and got great shots! I could even see sunspots!

but very good product nonetheless
Works exactly as advertised. Unfortunately, there were no sunspots when I received this filter, so it wasn't that exciting, but very good product nonetheless.

Works great! Easily attached
Works great! Easily attached. I like the fact that it's glass and has a metal frame. I've got a mylar one for my camera lens, and I'm always worried it'll get damaged.

Works great. Scary at first use
Works great. Scary at first use, what with all those dire warning about looking through a telescope directly at the sun! But this is the way to go.
