Motivating
I'm working on producing a course of my own and have purchased a few books to help. I found this one just recently and based on its description, it seemed to be more closely targeted to what I need. This book is about how Udemy works and how to use it to make money. That all depends on having a good course on a desired topic, but it also depends on understanding how Udemy works so you can take advantage of the platform. Much of the book's content is specific to Udemy, and success on Udemy is based on low prices and high volume. He discusses clearly how this works and that you can expect $5-10 for each sale.My problem is that my topic is a niche topic that won't have high volumes, and I'm choosing instead to use another site where I pay a fixed fee to host my course and can charge whatever I want. I won't get any of the marketing benefits Udemy provides, which is huge. Still, because it's a niche market for my course, I can more easily do some direct marketing myself and sell it at a price that makes the time I spend producing the course worthwhile. At least, that's my hope. :)I'm giving that background because even though the book isn't targeted specifically to my needs, I'm still giving it 5 stars. There's much material that is not Udemy-specific. For example, there are chapters on using Udemy to choose a topic. You can still use their tools and course development information even if you don't publish your course on Udemy. There are chapters on creating the course content, recording it, and putting it all together in post-production. He details his equipment and logistics to get more professional video and audio. This is generic information and applies to any course. These chapters were worth the purchase for me and are the reason for the five stars. Most of the remainder of the book is more Udemy-specific, but I still found it interesting, and some of it still applies outside of Udemy. The book is a fairly quick and easy read. The type is reasonably large, and there are plenty of pictures and white space. I feel like it's a bit padded to get a higher page count, but this doesn't bother me because the content is worthwhile, and it's nice to fly through the book. His writing style is personal since he explains what has personally worked for him and potential problems to avoid. The design of the book is a bit odd. It feels more like it was a PowerPoint slide show converted to a book, and in one place, he says if you're accessing this in a medium where you don't have a live link, you can search to find some related content. The beginning of each section has a slide, and in the printed version, they're pretty small, and the text is difficult to read. I don't think this is a big problem, and I could still understand the point of what the slide was saying. I also wish there were headers or footers with the chapter's name. Just thumbing through to find the end of the chapter was difficult because it wasn't always obvious where the next chapter started.Even with the issues mentioned, this has been the most relevant and helpful book for me. And maybe most important, it is motivating me to get started on the production of my course.
