A Solid Guide For Teaching Kids!
I was legitimately impressed by the presentation and information in this book. Let's face it. Chess is a pretty boring game if you're looking at it from the eyes of a young child. With cooler forms of entertainment out there like video games and augmented reality games, learning an ancient game like chess can seem fairly unsatisfying. However, this book presenting the entire "sport" very well. Most pages had detailed pictures and the text on each page was not overwhelming. My favorite thing about this guide is how most chapters end with a review to see if the child comprehended what they just learned. To be honest, nothing teaches chess better than learning while you play, but this guide comes a close second to learning the game.I've known how to play chess since I was in 3rd grade and even I learned some new things from this book. I highly recommend it if you want to spark an interest of chess in your child.

4 stars for concept. Execution could be improved
I love the idea of introducing children/young people to chess in an accessible way. However I bought the ebook version and it doesn't really hold up. For example, there are exercises that refer to coloured squares, when the ebook is black and white in its entirety. There are other exercises which are also cute ideas but harder to implement on an ebook (vs an app, say). I also thought some of the descriptions were just a bit elevated and confusing for a book aimed at kids. Sentences like "assigned a relative value...offensive and defensive ability" is very accurate, appropriate language for adults, but a bit of a pile-up for young children. It might be perfectly appropriate for teenage readers, but to be clear, the book is narrated by a cartoon pawn called Pawnie and his friends--it definitely feels like tonally it's geared more towards grades 2-5, but the vocabulary and syntax just don't level out. Also frankly the description of the eight ways a knight can move confused ME and I know chess and am in my 30s...I think it's a great concept so I hope the author would look at adapting some of the language and taking another look at how the paperback converts to ebook form to make sure ebook users are getting proper use of it. I think if folks were buying this for their kids they'd be better advised to splash out on the paperback, or if getting something for the tablet, find an app or slow youtube tutorial instead for the kiddos.

Chess Learner
No picture. I got this book for all my grandkids and my adult family. To finally learn to play a game of chess, to stimulate our family's brain. We still are learning from my 10 year old granddaughter. Love it.

Chess for the Complete Beginner!
I have always wanted to learn to play chess but never have. Kids are quite clever and pick things up easily. It comes a bit slower and with a lot more effort as an adult. If I could follow the instruction from this very well-written book, a child definitely can! It follows the KISS (Keep It Simple, Simon!) method and breaks down every step/rule into digestible bites. I am so happy I got this book. I'm going to start playing chess for the rest of pandemic lockdown! 🤩 Thank you, Sam Lemons, for giving me the courage and motivation to try!

Easy to follow
Bought for my 9 year old who had never played chess before. It held her interest and she picked up the basics quickly. You do have to make the effort to play the game alongside reading the book, to reinforce learning. It’s a good book to learn the basics.
