Great series, but start around book 5
This review is really about the entire series of Diamond books. It is a great series about a complex and driven detective. However, I have one suggestion. I think it took Mr. Lovesey several books to find his stride. I recently bought all of the Diamond books on the Kindle Daily Deal and started rereading them from the beginning. The first 4 books are definitely several steps below the quality of the later books. So I suggest you start reading around book 5 or 6. Then if you want to be complete, you can go back and catch the earlier books. You shouldn't have any problems jumping in. Things that happened in the earlier books are referred to, but you don't need to have read them to understand what's going on in the book you're reading.I have seen these books referred to as police procedurals. They are, but they are so much more. The characters are interesting as the plot and Mr. Lovesey doesn't spend as much time wallowing in the details as other procedurals do. The investigations usually run into several dead ends just like real investigations do, but unlike most police procedurals which proceed in a straight line from crime to solution. If you like mysteries with cops as the main characters, you should love these books. Some mysteries by English authors can be difficult to understand because they include stuff that is specific to British life. American readers shouldn't have any problems understanding everything in these books. Enjoy!

Another Murder, this one very close to home for Diamond!
This time the murder hits very close to home and Peter Diamond can not help the investigation. But of course he does it behind the scenes and gets no where until another similiar murder is discovered.Another wonderful murder mystery with the great Peter Diamond who can figure out any complicated murder. I won't give the plot away, but it is a complicated one, with a very unlikely murderer (NO, Diamond did not do it). This one deals a lot with Diamond's private life, and some changes that are extremely painful for him. That is the sideplot, and it is a good one because it does develop his character. If you love complex English murder mysteries, you are going to like this one. Dare you to guess who dun it!!

one of the best of Peter Diamond
What can I say? Peter Lovesey is my favorite mystery writer. He has to hurry up and finish another about Peter Diamond blecause I have read all of them! I almost fell out of my chair at the very beginning of the book. You will not be disappointed when you read this one! I am not giving away anything about the death the book is about.

Have enjoyed the entire series!
I came upon Lovesey quite by accident & have been pleasantly surprised & entertained. I have now read all 8 of the series featuring the curmudgeonly Inspector Peter Diamond & they make for a quick, enjoyable romp. These are not taunt thrillers but tongue-in-cheek good old fashioned murder mysteries, set in Bath, England. Diamond & his team solve their puzzles one piece at a time in the way good Policemen do. I heartily recommend these engaging stories.

Great British murder mysteries
I am absolutely addicted to Peter Lovesey's Inspector Diamond series. Diamond is indeed a diamond in the rough. He's difficult to work for, he's abrasive, he isn't exactly a feminist (but he's evolving), but he's always thinking. He's extremely human and three-dimensional, as are all the other characters. The mysteries are a delight and not easy to crack. I'm currently on book 9 of the series, and I'll go right on reading them all.

Wonderful characters
Lovesey gives us just enough to trust him yet enough to give it all away. The Bath details give us a bit of a vacation to boot!

Twist
A decently written crime story with a resolution that I never saw coming.

As usual a winner
Peter Lovesey spins a yarn in that. you have no idea where it is going. The rogue Peter Diamond is up to his tricks that no one but he has the answer. I have never been disappointed in any one of these books and always look forward to the next in the series. I do enjoy reading the books in order which I really recommend doing.

Diamond's wife gets killed.
Diamond is excused from the investigation of the murder, but succeeds in fining the killer when carrying out his own investigation. Surprise ending, but believable.

Love this series
I stopped reading this series several years ago, due to the price of these kindle books.I was born and brought up in Bath, and love detective stories; so what's not to like? Well the price actually.I decided to order this, (despite the high price),the next one in the series for me; and it was a lovely read.Just looked at the next one in the series: The House Sitter, and it's £5.49 again. It's a lot to pay for a couple of books a week. Such a shame. I'll keep checking the price, just in case there's a reduction.

Almost OK
I have read several Diamond books and find them very readable page-turners. This was no different and he behaves in character as before, this is one of the attractions. I also like the detail of Bath that is introduced. I have known Bath in the past and find myself visualising the situations. It certainly makes the series seem to take live in a real place. I often wonder about the accuracy of the geography but that might be my memory. Who cares anyway? it is not a geography text and it certainly makes me feel involved. As another reviewer has said the solution was a bit of a disappointment. Up to the last few pages it was fine but I think any other ending would have been a bit of a problem. I sometimes wonder whether an entirely unknown person brought in at the end would have been almost as satisfying. One thing that worries me a bit about the series as it has developed is the interaction between the characters. Chief Superintendent is a senior rank in the police. The interaction with subordinates he works with closely is fine but I doubt whether his superiors would behave as they do,especially as his record shows his success.
