What's the best way to eat dessert? Do twins really have a psychic connection? What kind of guys are into moe girls? These are the kinds of questions that float through the inquisitive mind of anime super-fan Konata Izumi. When she's not lost in her favorite manga or logging hours in one of her online games, she's debating the mysteries of the universe with the best friends a girl could ask for. And while they might not share Konata's refined eye for anime tropes and trivia, she doesn't hold it against them. After all, Miyuki Takara is a precious moe dream girl, and twin sisters Tsukasa and Kagami are always there when she needs a helping hand or a notebook to copy homework from (even if Kagami insists on being totally tsundere about it). At the end of the day, Konata could look far and wide, but she'd never find a better group of girls to get her through the horrors of high school! Disc 3 - Lucky Star The Complete Series Review: Worth every penny! - This series is for all ages. There is something for everyone, guys and girls. After seeing a great many clips online of this anime, I decided to watch a little of season one and instantly ordered this set after I had seen the first three episodes. (this set contains season one and two) This stuff is highly comforting and addictive. Great to watch seriously, or to just throw in and casually view. Considering each episode is a divergence from its last, the way you watch them can be anyway you like. Also great to watch with a friend! The general concept is the everyday little things that happen to all of us while around our friends.. the little details that occur in small talk and deep conversations. There is a lot of philosophizing over matters that seem very small, yet the way the characters each handle this subject matter is so adorable and fun to watch. There are a lot of situations that the team of characters run into independently but mainly together. There are four main characters, all 17(?) year old high school girls. Two of the four are the main, main characters, Konata and Kagamin. These two give us a lot of joy to watch because they are constantly at ends with eachother's way of doing things. Konata is the rebellious, cool chick who works at the local cosplay cafe, always skips studying in lieu of watching new episodes of anime being aired, or going by the bookstore to check out/pick up the newest manga. She is a self proclaimed otaku, meaning one who obsesses over video games, anime, manga and the like. Kagamin is her polar opposite. A dedicated, hard working and studying classmate who is a natural leader. These two personality types work quite well together and are best friends in this series. There is Tsukasa who is the fraternal twin of Kagamin, she is an airhead but a cute lovable and interesting girl. Then Miyuki-san. Pink haired, bespectacled girl who is the naturally maternal, super intelligent and insightful friend. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how good a series about random subject matter and everyday happenings can truly be. I guess it's mostly in the cuteness of it all and in how well defined and developed all the characters throughout, are. The art work is very precise and crisply drawn, also very colorful and fluid. It is a pleasure to see. Please purchase this box set! It may not be a structurally amazing anime series like Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or Death Note. It is however, an incredible joy and top of the line viewing material! I guess the genre is called 'slice of life.' :) Review: Lucky Star is a laid back funny slice of life, super relaxing. A must watch - This is a super chill, and super laid back slice of life. It’s filled with a ton of comedy, and is the definition of low stress. It’s a lot like k-on in someways, and it’s a great mindless watch after work, or just after a long day of anything. You’ll get more enjoyment out of Lucky Star if you’ve seen The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, there’s a few skits and references throughout this anime that add to the vibe. If you haven’t seen Haruhi, I’d recommend giving that a watch first. Lucky Star definitely has my recommendation, and while it may be an older anime, it still holds up really well. I sought this out in hopes that it would be comparable to k-on, but Lucky Star actually surpassed it for me. There’s plenty of slice of life comedies out there involving cute girls out of Kyoami (Kyoto Animation), but this one is truly special. The humor is so unique, so much so that there really isn’t anything else like this. Just a heads up, this release of Lucky Star also comes with the DVD’s, and a ton of extras which aren’t included in the newer essentials variety. To be exact, this edition contains a whole extra disc of interviews, and all kinds of extras. This release is a little more expensive than the essentials variety, but it’s definitely worth it. I think this is one of those anime that you either love it, or you hate it; and I loved it. I’d suggest giving it at least three episodes before you make your own decision, just keep an open mind and roll with it. I wasn’t sold at the very beginning, but after finishing this anime it has definitely become one of my all time favorites. I believe it’s a must own in any anime collection. I’d give this a 10/10. Enjoy! Edit: Konata is my spirit animal

Good show. I had no problem watching it straight through. Funny, with a little adult humor..
This was not what I expected. After seeing the previews, and the cover art, I expected more of a girly, or kid type of show.. But in fact, that was wrong. It is still fine for kids, but there is also a lot of adult humor in there too. Things that kids most likely would not pick up on, as it is hidden in there decently.. By looking at the front, you will probably expect that these are kinds in junior high or something. They are not. They are high school girls. The show revolves around these 4 girls, one which is an otaku, one is a brainiac, one is a klutz, and one with a strong personality. The Otaku girl is always making comments that revolve around her interests ( which she plays adult games, so you can imagine where that goes). She has a father that is a bit of a pervert, but is still fun to watch. and the strong girl is always going back and forth with the otaku girl, which leaves some interesting situations, and comments. I really do not want to give too much away, but, overall, the show was very good. I had no problem watching it straight though (yes, I have had some that after a few episodes, or a disk, I needed to take a brake from it).. This one kept me entertained where I did not need to take breaks in the middle, and put something else in for a while. It is basically a high school comedy. It is well worth the money.

A great re-release by FUNimation.
Just got it in and boy, oh boy, am I happy to own it! As some long time fans may know, Lucky Star became a hit and later down the road, was released in a "Anime Legends" collection from Bandai. However, Bandai no longer releases western anime and the Lucky Star Anime Legends is now out of print, making Lucky Star a difficult and expensive collection to own. But thanks to Funimation, it's back and everybody who couldn't own the series now has a chance: in Blu-Ray and DVD with the OVA! Like previous reviews here, it is indeed not a very slick HD make-over, but most anime will be like that due to its age. If you are nor a serious nitpicker, you will enjoy the heck out of this package. It features both Dub and Sub and everything you love about in Lucky Star. And the Dub is the original Dub, which is a really good cast. Some people ask if the OVA is dubbed this time and sadly, it isn't. But it doesn't take the enjoyment away. If you love Lucky Star or want to try it and own it for the heck of it, this is a good product to own. It's a Slice-of-Life anime to not be taken to serious and fun to watch for a relaxing day.

A lot of discs!
I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of Lucky Star. I enjoyed the series years ago, but I normally wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it. So why would I buy it and give it five stars? There is no easy answer, so I will just write a review. The animation is simple and cartoony, not anything like Kyoto Animation’s normal “every frame matters” quality. Some will enjoy this limited animation style but others will find it too simple or disregard it as a time slot filler like you would find on Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon where audience figures are always drastically low. Personally, I don’t like the animation style, but considering what many top rated American cartoon shows look like today, this could be considered high art. Regardless, the animation style does fit the type of series Lucky Star is. Also it must have been fun to do this after their previous series full of heartbreak, tension, and drama. They probably needed this break. Some of the jokes in Japanese make little sense to an average Westerner, the English dub tries to correct that but sometimes falls flat. It’s the same voices you hear in many other dubs. Although I am not a English dub fan at all, this one works both ways. If you have a more than passing understanding of Japanese tradition and culture, the subtitled version is great. The more casual viewer will enjoy the English dub. Plot wise there is nothing really going on here. There is no deeper meaning. If you have watched other Kyoto Animation shows, You expect deep drama. There is none here. I came into Lucky Star expecting more of the same, instead it was like watching the Haruhi-Chan shorts. Fun but no substance. My daughter, who was quite young at the time, loved it. Even as an adult, it still holds a special place in her heart. And really, that’s why it is good. For those who have grown up, it’s an exaggerated version of their own high school life, or at least what they wish it had been like. For those who haven’t been there yet, it’s the ideal dream of what high school would be like. Most importantly, it’s about friendship and really how everyone you know fits into a cliche cookie cutter personality type, or two or three. That’s perhaps over analyzing it quite a lot, but when I look at my daughters high school friends, they are all pretty similar to the characters of Lucky Star. Perhaps distorted outrageous one dimensional caricatures somewhat resembling their personalities, but I could tell which of her friends was similar to each character on the show. Dare I say it has a “Saved by the Bell” vibe to it? Best not to cross that line. This is a Funimation release, so that means lots of discs with little content. It’s a blu ray-DVD combo pack, so that means extra discs one one format or another that you don’t need and will never use. Also, because it’s Funimation you have an unskippable commercial on each disc for something you already own or will never be interested in that you are forced to watch every time you want to watch the show. If you are lucky (no pun intended) your player or video game console will remember where you left off and skip to that point when you re-insert the disc. It rarely works though and the Funimation forced commercials are far worse than binge watching “The Endless Eight” in its entirety for eight days straight. Otherwise, the video quality and sound are good. Like I said, I am not a fan of Lucky Star but I understand it’s appeal and enjoy the humor. Just because it’s not my favorite doesn’t mean that it should get a poor score. It caused a sensation with people doing the dance just like they did with Haruhi Suzumiya. It set yet another level of Moe that every other anime studio tried to reproduce or top. It created memes and still gets referenced by anime fans to this day. A show about cute girls being cute and doing cute things, in the end, was quite culturally significant. For that alone it should get five stars, but there is one thing that I judge all comedy based shows by. If I get one good uncontrollable belly laugh at least three times, I have gotten my money’s worth. Lucky Star had Six. I was entertained. Some of the female members of my family adore the show, so buying it was a requirement. It’s nice to have it on hand to watch whenever, without the potential hassle or problems of streaming or internet outages like on some occasions when we tried to watch a show on the Funimation app. Buy a copy today. It’s cheap and well worth the money!!!

Show Is Great, Blu-Ray Mixed Feelings
I bought this because I wanted to rewatch it, but wasn’t subscribed to a service with it. As said in the title, the show is hilarious, with many references for nerds, especially towards video games, manga, and anime. However, the Blu-Ray release has some good and some bad. The good is that the show is all there, including the OVA and extras. As well as this, it seems to be in 60 fps, so some cgi scenes or higher-budget hand-animated scenes look smoother. However, the resolution is lower than expected, especially for a Blu-Ray release. Using downscaling programs, the picture couldn’t be any better than 480p, the resolution of a DVD. However, even streamed versions are like this, and the only way to fix this is to download a “legit” version online. I overall still think it’s worth my money, but make sure you know of the details before you make a purchase, and make sure you are ok with standard-def picture quality.
