Highly recommended as an entry level or field microscope
I bought both this product, Carson MicroBrite 20x-40x LED Lighted Pocket Microscope for Learning, Education and Exploring (MM-24, MM-24MU) and the higher magnification sibling, Carson MicroBrite Plus 60x-120x Power LED Lighted Pocket Microscope (MM-300) . Both are inexpensive, and overall, I'm happy with them. I liked the lower powered one better because it comes with base that has a glass slide holder. The image quality is surprisingly good for the price. It is easy to use, however, I would have preferred if the control for magnification and focus were switched, i.e., have the focus with a twisting dial at the bottom and a lever to change the magnification, like in the higher magnification model (60-100x). I also prefer the other model's light, which stays on until you click the button, and the AA battery. However, although it may sound like I like the other model better than this, I actually like the 20-40x model better because of the removable base and it being more useful to look at a wide range of objects.I am a researcher and have access to research-grade microscopes. This inexpensive microscope does not replace a research microscope. However, it is a great entry microscope that may be useful, say, for a field trip in a college-level class, like my Invertebrate Zoology or Parasitology classes. I may order a bunch of this scopes for my classes to take to the beach or field.A few things could be better: as mentioned above, the focus could be better if it were on a twisting dial and the battery could stay on, and with a larger battery (e.g., AA). It would also be useful if it could capture the image (but adding a camera it would increase considerably the cost); alternatively, it would be more useful if it could be attached to a cell phone camera, since cell phones are ubiquitous and take great photos. And a small detail: the scope could have a ring or loop so that it could be wore on a chain or lanyard like a jeweler's loupe (the 60-100x model has it).As others have suggested, it would be a great gift to a child who may be interested in sciences. And being so inexpensive, it is a low risk investment. This scope is much easier to use and has better image quality that other simple microscopes that I have seen. I highly recommend it.

A useful portable field microscope
I bought this for my 5 year old grandson as a Christmas gift and mhad it delivered to him…. on a visit to see him in February, I got a chance to see it for myself and demonstrate its use and operation to my grandson. I used an onion skin and leaf to demonstrate it. I found it was easy to use both for me and him, and was surprised at the quality and resolution of the image. My grandson saw the image and was truly amazed at what he saw, and once I showed him how to use it, he could then use it by himself. The controls and light worked well and were simple to use. I was impressed with the usability and price point of this small microscope. Perfect for a budding science student, no matter what age they are!

Great kids scope
It’s a very good scope, considering the cost.I got one about 2 years ago for my daughter, and just picked up 2 more to give as gifts. The microscope is probably the best feature. One thing I have learned is that the LED light in this does not get very bright if 1.25V rechargeable batteries used. Alkaline or lithium 1.5V required for actual usable brightness. The whistle is loud and clear. At first I thought something must have broke inside this scope during transit because the scope rattled when picked up and moved around. But then I realized that it was the pea of the whistle. The little 9x swing out magnifier works OK, it’s lens is plastic so the magnified view through it is a little warped, but still clear enough that fine print is legible. The telescope function works fairly well, but needs a very steady hand to see much through it.As noted in some other reviews, the compass does not work well while batteries are in. Close proximity to the batteries pretty much make the compass useless. having batteries in it for extended periods does not ruin the magnetic properties of the compass, however. I suspect a small amount of EMF created by the battery constantly powering the clock is what upsets the compass. The clock does not keep time well. Oh well, it’s not needed at all.

Neatest little thing!!
I am really into collecting crystals and wanted to have a closet look. I didn't want anything expensive or high tech, just basic. I came across this and saw it has decent reviews and was so INEXPENSIVE I figured I had nothing to lose!I'm so glad I got this, it arrived the next day and was ready to go! I couldn't stop looking at everything! I immediately ended up ordering some for friends. It's tiny, cheap and fun, highly recommend for inspecting things closer or to just explore!

Better than expected! Perfect for kids!
These microscopes are way more powerful than I expected and my kids (ages 6 and 3) absolutely LOVE them. We even saw tardigrades!!Usually we don’t even use the slides bc it’s so engaging for the kids to run around and use their microscopes directly on the ground, etc.. But I had to leave a review and report that it DOES indeed work for viewing tardigrades. My 6 year old was beside herself with delight.Oh and we’ve had these for over 6mo and they have held up to heavy use. Recommend!!

Light isn’t working.
The microscope worked great and was great fun but the light started shorting out almost immediately. You can’t see anything without the light. I bought an extra set of prepared slides, but the 4 year old mostly runs around looking at objects around the house. Would have been 5 stars if the light would just work consistently!

5 yo using it as I type
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 5 yo. It's just a few days after Christmas and he hasn't stopped using it. My 82 yo dad thought it was so fun I just ordered him one. This is going to be one of my go tos for Kids Birthday gifts from now on. Super fun and holding up very well!

Serious and practical
I was nervous about this purchase. So many microscopes for children are flimsy and fiddly, offering impractical magnifications that attract but are virtually unusable. Far better to be in the 10-50x range than the 200-500x.This product is excellent for the scale of thing that a young child might want to look at. The optics are good, the LED light works well, the whole thing feels robust and it could be carried easily on a country walk.Supervision is needed, especially in the use of slides and cover slips, though they are plastic.I bought it as a Christmas present for my youngest granddaughter. The picture shows me setting a slide up for her. (Water from the saucer of a plant pot. She did other, dry, objects herself.Session 1: leaves and onion layers - cells seen and described.Session 2: the dirty water as mentioned. Even though in winter and after a lot of rain, we managed to see some swimming single-cell organisms - probably Euglena. Her observations of these were spot on.Great product - not a toy microscope - a genuine introduction to another world.
