Y The Last Man Deluxe Book Five Review
So, here we are. The last book about the last men on Earth, Yorik Brown! Many of you would think I'm cheating because I didn't wrote a review for each part, but... man! I'm a bit tired! I read all 5 books in a week. A few hours before sleeping. Sometimes I was so tired but I couldn't stop reading. The story is THAT gripping!Anyway, as you might already know, the book is about a world that is being habitated only by women given that a plague killed every mammal with a Y chromosome. Meaning, every man, dog, bull, etc on Earth is dead... Except for "master" escapist, Yorik Brown and his manle monkey, Ampersand. Why Yorik and Ampersand are alive? Whay the plague didn't kill them? Well, you won't find out up until the 5th book, but that doesn't mean there's nothing on the road, isn't it?I'm fascinated on how the writer managed to create a world were only women rule. There's the afraid, confusion, and then fractioning.Afraid? Well, the current way of living is gone forever.Confusion? How would the femenine gender manage to go on, when most of the labor used to be made by men!Fractioning? Intersting how there's several group of women such as the Daughters of the Amazon, or the Army Gals from Israel, that form groups of women gathered by common believe. VERY interesting! The action, character development, interesting points of view about life, machismo and other stuff is right there and written beautifully. I'mpossible not to laugh or feel angry when stuff happen. Those emotions can only be get on a comics when the writing is damn good. The art also do it's part. The covers made by JG Jones are amazing, and the inside art by Pia Guerra is also perfect for the story. It goes hand and hand. Just lovely!Every book comes with a good set of extras, going from sketches on Volume 1 (and 2, I believe), and the other volumes contain the scrip for one of the chapters. When I end reading the series, I felt... Not sure how I felt, but I do know that I felt I just read one of the most amazing stories ever written, and I don't say that lightly. If you want to read a comics, but not necessarily a Super-hero comic, I higly recommend these books. They have a begining, a resolution and an end. There's no more after the fith. Is all over. And that makes me love the series even more.

Great comic book series
I bought the entire series after it was complete, and published in deluxe hard cover collections. I still bought them one volume at a time, and read them in sequence. Even that approach was nail biting in some cases when I couldn't get the book right away when I was done reading the previous one!! Maybe worth noting that when I started reading “Y” I was in a “Walking Dead” mindset, having just finished re-reading the entire collected works all the way to Volume 8. The story is captivating, even though the plot in itself is not super original. Being the last man on earth, literally, is not a new theme. But the main story, the side stories and all the characters are very well rounded. The timeline and chronology is very well handled. I loved the black panels with white text to set the place and time context. The drawing, which is such an important part for me when reading comic books or graphic novels, is very very solid, brilliant in some cases. I look at the pages a lot, without even reading words, for quite some time, before reading the story. Even if I could notice when the artist changed, it was not detrimental to the quality, the flow, or the story telling. The ONLY thing that I could mention as a very slight negative is the panel cut which is almost clinically identical across the entire story, except for some full page art, full bleed coloring, and some other effects of that nature. I am used to –and enjoy– more original cutting of the panels as in European comics from France, Spain, Belgium, etc. and it made it to the more traditional US and English comics too. The chapters detailing the interaction and instructions between the writer and the artist, the sketches, and other extra material definitely make those books a great addition to your comics collection. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A complete-feeling conclusion to one of the best graphic novel series of all time
Well I didn't see that coming.. The final volume of "Y- THE LAST MAN" certainly had some surprises in store, and I bet very few readers were able to accurately predict how the story would end. The personal journeys of Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann were the main focus of the entire series, and they got most of the attention during this final volume as well. I found their stories compelling, believable, and satisfying (if not always happy), and at the end of this book you really feel like to got the entire tale. No sudden departure or leaving the reader wondering here, as Vaughn delivers what you'd expect from a master story-teller, giving you all the detail (and epilogue) to wrap the story up completely. Less satisfying was the revelations about what actually killed all the males and why Yorick (and Ampersand) alone were spared. It doesn't really take away from the overall enjoyment of the story, but I was really expecting something more imaginative and provocative than what was delivered. But, it goes back to the point that the main focus of the series was the personal stories of the characters, and not so much the global story of gendercide and recovery. Overall, an extremely well-done conclusion to an absolutely wonderful series. As for these deluxe hardcover editions, I totally recommend them. High-quality paper, some additional artwork, large format, dust jacket, and bonus material make these editions must have for collectors and simply better than the trade paperbacks. When you consider that these are really two volumes in one, they actually come out cheaper too, so there is really no reason why you wouldn't go with these deluxe editions if you're trying to decide between the two.

This is the end, beautiful friend, the end of our elaborate plans...
The final volume of a truly great series like this can only be greeted with a certain amount of sadness. It's the mark of a really good book that you don't want it to end. You want to spend more time with these characters you've come to know and genuinely care about. That aside, does this final volume pay off as expected? Well, almost nothing about this series has been as expected. One of it's great joys is that almost every time the tale has seemed to be going down a predictable route, it has veered off into something completely unexpected. Of course, I'm not going to give any 'spoilers' here, and I will just say that the ending satisfied me...I wish that other comic book series that are genuinely interesting, engaging and well-crafted got the opportunity this one had to play out to a proper conclusion. This is sadly rare in a medium still regarded by many comic book companies as disposable. Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in producing Y: The Last Man, one of the few truly great graphic novels, among the best I've ever read, and I've read a lot, having been a comic book reader since the early 1960s.

Great series
I won't go in to much detail but this comic series is great. Books 1-3 are amazing. Book 4 is good but sadly 5 lets it down a little. Get them all as they still please!
