Very quite, quick refill mostly well made
** UPDATE** Had the compressor a few months now and I love it. Absolutely NO leaks. Leave it plugged in and turned on and never hear it cycle unless I am using it. It's in my shop in the basement so I would hear it if it was cycling. Ready to use when I need it. SUPER HAPPY with it so far. *** I got this compressor to replace a 15 year old, oil bath - single cylinder compressor of the same style. My old compressor got me through a lot of projects and has been a fantastic unit but very loud :-( . This year when I went to power it on for the first time after spending the winter in the garage it will not build pressure. After messing around with it for a while I decided it was time to upgrade to something a but quieter. Of course after ordering the new unit, I was able to find a YouTube video on how to repair my old unit :-) but I decided it was time for a replacement. First impressions: the unit came double boxed with good packing material. There was no shipping damage but it appears that there was "factory" fresh damage in the form of scratches and chips in the paint. Not a huge deal and definately is only cosmetic. Hope to post a couple of videos on how quiet this unit is compared to my old compressor. As other reviewers have said the control panel is a bit on the thin side so as another reviewer suggested, I used a piece of copper strapping to reinforce the manifold mounting points. (have included a lot of pictures). I used a hose clamp to attach the strap to the manifold. When I was shopping for this compressor I was a bit disappointed in the lack of detailed photos so I have done my best to remedy that situation, So far I have tested the unit with my 22g, 18g, 15g and 8G air nailers as well as my 1/2" impact gun and my 3/8" air ratchet. The unit quickly fills the tanks (about 60 sec) and shuts off at 120psi. Cycles back on at 90psi and builds back to 120psi in about 15 seconds. The unit is heavier than I expected but at least 80% of the weight is the motor and pumps. I expect to use this compressor mostly in my shop. If I get to the point where I need to make it more portable I will mount it on a folding luggage cart. The only 2 negative I am aware of at this time are (1) the less than sturdy control panel and (2) the unprotected pressure switch and on/off switch. (see last picture. If U was going to be carrying this in the back of a work truck I think I would weld up a cage to protect the switch from accidental damage. Other than those 2 issues this unit is very well made. If I get the promised 3000 hours of run time out of this unit I will be a happy man. That's basically a year and one half of 8 hours a day 5 days a week nailing.. :-) So far I am very pleased with my purchase.

INCREDIBLE Product! Just DON'T buy it from Amazon.
This air compressor is INCREDIBLE! If you use an air compressor for work or for personal use, this one is GREAT! There are several great aspects to it such as how fast it builds pressure and especially how QUIET it is. I run my compressor indoors and you can barely hear it when you are a room or two away from it. BUT.... Just don't buy it from Amazon. Why? Because you won't be dealing with the normal incompetence we have all come to expect from the delivery drivers that Amazon has. No, you get to deal with a different group of delivery people who appear to have been hired for their complete lack of desire to make any attempt to deliver your product. I'm talking about the freight delivery people. My purchase was made after doing a fair amount of research on compressors. The California Air Tools compressor stood out from the rest. The dual piston design and the high power electric motor really set it apart from the rest. I set the delivery address to my work place address so I could be sure that the "porch pirates" wouldn't get it. And since I set the address to a business address I left special instructions stating that I would be waiting at the address for the delivery, even AFTER normal business hours. Amazon's phone app shows where the driver is and how many stops are before your delivery. The app showed that my delivery was only three stops away. I went to the front window to wait for the driver to arrive. A few minutes later I checked the app and a message appeared stating that the driver reported a delivery attempt was made but could not be completed. This was FALSE information #1 from Amazon. I called the customer service line to ask what happened for the delivery to not be made. The operator said that the driver reported that no one was available to receive the delivery. I asked the operator to look at the order's special instructions. She saw that I had stated in the special instructions that I would personally be waiting at the address for the delivery. Then came FALSE information #2. The operator told me that she would contact the delivery driver and have them turn around and come back. The operator then asked if I would mind giving my cell number to give to the delivery driver so he could contact me when he was coming back. I gave my number and asked how long it would be before I would hear from the driver. FALSE information #3 from the operator was that it would be about 15 minutes when I would hear from the driver. I waited 30 minutes for my California Air Tools compressor delivery driver to contact me. And as you have probably guessed, no contact was made. I called the customer service number again. The operator who answered told me that the special instructions don't actually go to the delivery driver which is something that I can't confirm. But with how Amazon seems to operate, this wouldn't surprise me in the least. Then the operator told me that they have no ability to send any sort of communication to the delivery drivers in the field. Again, this is something that I am not able to confirm. So, if you are in need of a great air compressor that is SUPER quiet and fast I would definitely recommend the California Air Tools line of compressors. The dual piston design will fill the 4.5~ gallon capacity of my compressor in just about a minute. When I do use it I don't have to get out a 100 foot air hose and place the compressor outside, I can have it in the house or the room I am working in without having to deal with the noise other compressors make. The only thing I am not 100% satisfied with about my California Air Tools compressor is the pressure regulator. It isn't the easiest to set to your desired pressure. When you turn the knob it will adjust the pressure in large jumps instead of a few PSI at a time. Maybe this is due to operator error or maybe it is something everyone experiences. Check out their line up if you are in need of an air compressor. Yes, they are more expensive than nearly every other brand out there. But the build quality and the operation of it are well worth the cost. Just don't buy it from Amazon. You'll regret it as much as I do when you get shafted by Amazon like I did.

Ridiculously quiet!
My first impression was how quiet it is. I would compare it to being louder than a dryer and much quieter than a cordless vacuum. The tone is low and not ear piercing. I tested my Tornador and it moves enough air consistently to get the job done. It does kick on often but it doesn't matter because the noise pollution is so low. Compared to my 20+ year old 10 gallon compressor I just got rid of, I'm completely blown away.

poor metallurgy, avoid
I'm a home builder. Have been for 20 years. Through my various building forays, I've used a myriad of air tools and compressors. The low decibels, reasonably high cfms, and aluminum tanks lured me in-- three sirens! Don't be fooled. Indeed, this quiet little puppy packs a punch. I was excited at first. No headache at the end of the day. No rusty discharge water. After a few months, though, I noticed rust on the bottom of the frame. That's never happened with my Emglo and Dewalt compressors; I became concerned with the quality of metals. Last week, both air couplings began leaking. I purchased Bostitch replacements at a local yard. Incredibly standard stuff. As I screwed them in, the manifold cracked! I called customer service- was told that I over tightened. Unlikely as I was using a short adjustable wrench. And you can't really over tighten these things, they eventually would bottom out. Because this manifold is cast, it isn't serviceable. It needs to be replaced. $40 for the part, $20 for expedited shipping, $15/ each for CAT couplings = $90!!! I bought a used Bositch manifold, couplings, gauges, and mounting plate at my local parts store and zip tied it to the side of the compressor. It's gaudy but it works, and it's serviceable. A manifold should NEVER need replacing. At least not in its entirety, the Bostitch manifold can be repaired if needed, piece by piece. Techs at the parts store said they'd never seen anything like the CAT manifold. Stay away from these compressors. They're good in concept, poor in construction. One more note- has always had difficulty with the kick-in pressure.

A contractor's dream (and his contomer's)
I am now a couple weeks into my new compressor and overall I am very pleased. To start with I will say this is not the best compressor for everyone, however, if you are an idividule/contractor that is often in need of a compressor for work indoors that can still put out. This is it. Do not be fooled by the picture though this model is HEAVY and not as mobile as it would appear. That said it is I am sure far more mobile than the other 2HP offerings and can safely sit in the back of my cab if the seat is folded up. This in its self is a huge benifit as it means I can keep my $300 investment out of the rain and out of the pawn shops. If I do find myself on a job where I need more than 4 gallons of tank storage I can use one of the 10 gallon spare tanks inline just fine. Now for the meat and potatoes of this review. Is it really as queit as the sales pitch claims? No, it is still louder than I expected at 77db at the compressor. To CAT's credit though it is a much lower pitch hum compared to most other units that have a grating whine, and that 77 quickly drops off as you walk away from the unit. At about 5' away I was comfortable having a conversation with my brother while it ran. At about 8' away I had a conversation on the phone with an associate who couldn't believe that my compressor was running. Compare this to my old *insert brand here* 2 gallon .25hp unit(which I thought was quiet to begin with) and it was about half as loud at the same distance. The impressive thing is that it is managing to do this while delivering enough power to run LVLP, HVLP, and nail guns continuously. The biggest problem I have with this unit and the only reason that it does not get five stars is the build quality. Although the motor and tank seem to be of a good construction the frame and control panel have room for improvement. When I got my unit I was careful in unpacking and inspected the box for damage and found none. However, when I inspected the unit its self I found a few nicks and scrapes in the paint as well as one of the tack welds had snapped free. I also soon discovered that the rubber handle on the top of my unit had been glued on in a hurry and not properly aligned. The last problem resolved its self as the rubber handle came off all together the second time I picked it up. I was able to glue the grip back on, and straight this time, but this is not something that I expect to do with a $300 compressor. The final quality issues is the control panel that holds the manifold and quick connects in place. It has been said on here before and I will say it again. The plate needs to be thicker so that it does not flex when you connect a hose. This again is not a serious issue and I can live with it/fix it, but again, $300 so I shouldn't have to. All in all it is a great compressor with a good combination of power and noise level while remaining relatively portable and compact. The only real problem that CAT needs to address are the finishing touches. At about three times the cost of your bargain compressors people expect both a good and good looking tool. If that means the cost of the unit needs to be raised a little to cover the Q&A guy's salary then it should be done. In the meantime I HIGHLY recommend this compressor (or its larger tank model) to all my fellow contractors. Let's ditch the bulky wheelbarrow compressors that people can hear for miles and save our hearing!

6 Year UPDATE!!
2024 Update: I've been rockin this compressor for 6 years now and just ran into my first problem with it. The drain valve seazed up on me and I am gonna have to replace it. Cost me a whole 10 bucks. I love this compressor. It is still super quiet and keeps up with 2 framing guns running full speed. It also will run a texture hopper nearly non stop. You do gotta pause for a few seconds here and there but nothing like the stuff I see other guys using where they are paused more than they are spraying. This is a great compressor. Original review: I wish there were 6 stars. I've been using a PC pancake compressor for years now and dread hearing that thing kick on. This thing is amazingly quiet and still puts out more than double the air. If you don't need so much air you can get the 4610 for a hundred bucks less. It is a heavy beast but I run long air hoses so I don't move it around much. It fits into a side bin on my work van. You can run this in your garage while your working and carry on a normal conversation. I wish I would have bought this a long time ago. If you're thinking about it I say go for it. You'll be happy like me.

Sweet little compressor. Sooooo QUIET!!
Just received my spiffy new 4620AC. CAT must have been reading some of the older reviews about packaging and build quality as mine arrived double boxed and had form-fit styrofoam blocking, no packaging issues or shipping damage to report. Looking the unit over there are no visible QC issues, everything is tight and right. As other reviews have mentioned, the faceplate that supports the twin air connectors is a tad flimsy feeling, a slightly thicker plate stock would solve this. As also mentioned, the manifold is attached at four points and has a flexible air line, so as long as the user isn’t stabbing the connectors in with Magilla Gorilla force it shouldn’t be a problem. Installed the air filters and fired it up. Came up to 122 pounds in 58 seconds. Wow, that’s fast! This is “THE” QUIETEST compressor I have ever heard with exception of $5k+ Air Stars that I used to install in dental offices. It has been holding at 122 for 4 hours now, so no leaks encountered. I purchased this unit when my son took his 8 gal Oiler back from long term loan... I am refurbishing a 945 square foot deck and installing an attached patio cover over same. I will write a follow up for performance comments once that is completed.

QUIET and doesn't want to walk when running.
I haven't had a chance to use this compressor much so I have no idea how it will do over time but so far I REALLY like this compressor. This is my first oil-less compressor and I was looking at the oil bathed compressors (Rol and Mak) when I found this one. At first start up with no air in the tank it is when it makes the most noise, I'm not sure the purpose of a small valve that bleeds until a small amount of pressure is built up but then is shuts and the compressor is really quiet and as long as the tank has some pressure in it the valve never makes the noise again. The compressor builds air fast from empty to shut off and once filled has a fast cycle time once it does have to run, I still cannot believe this is an oil-less compressor where it is so quiet. The compressor did show up with a few bends on the main flat plate (very minor) but its a tool and not a show item and I cannot imagine how these things are tossed about during shipping. The unit is balanced really well from the carry handle and easy to move around for it's size and weight, I was honestly expecting it to be worse than it is from the experience I had when I borrowed a friends Rol pancake compressor. The air hose connectors are very nice since they stay in the back position and this allows you to connect a hose with one hand and not have to pull the ring back with the other hand. I have run this compressor off of a 15 amp breaker several times without issue.
