As an inititiate some of the process is ok towards terms. But the workings known as travaye are wrong and too hoodoo. Also many descriptions of lwa are wrong. Much of vodou is secret. There Are other books which have a better understanding. It seems this authors strong point is not vodou but rather hoodoo. I did like the veve tattoo info because I’m in agreement. There is a huge part missing from this book.

This book is great for beginners, an awesome guide to understanding voodoo for what it truly is. Rather than condemn the ancient spiritual practice, Mari Silva celebrates the culture and pays homage to the evolution of its history, and the people connected to it. In her explanation of how it came to the west/US is subtle yet informative, and shed light on how the spiritual practice came to be viewed as a negative form of black magic. The sections relating to how to practice and create sacred elements included in practice are detailed and well researched. I would recommend anyone, in an religion, and from any culture to read this book.

This is not a topic I'd ever thought to research but Mari Silva has done a great job breaking down all the elements of Vodou/Voodoo. It is very informative and well written.I love learning about history and different "unconventional" religions and this author brings a broad range of topics for anyone to choose from. I will be reading more from her.
