i want to convert to a 1x10 system on my mtb. and i want a wide range casette (11-42 tooth) should i get a medium or long cage?

The medium should work fine as long as you keep the chain ring size to 32t or smaller.

Does in work on 3 (front) x 8 (rear) speeds ?

This rear derailleur is specifically a 10-speed shifter. It will not work with an 8 speed cassette. It will work with a 3-speed front derailleur.
