Will this product protect the TV from direct sunlight and the Houston heat?

Yes. My TV cover is in direct sunlight all summer long and withstands Chicago winters, too! It has held up nicely! I am very happy with this TV cover and will purchase it again when this one eventually needs to be replaced.

I have a 65” tv that is 57.2 inches wide. Is that cutting close to the 58” width? Will it be a pain to put on being so close to 58” width cover?

I would get a cover for a 65 inch tv. I love ours.

Can you use this cover with a 42”tv on a stand (not mounted)?

The opening for the mounted arm on my 42" T.V. is at the back of the cover. The cover just fits my T.V. and would not allow for a stand, unless the stand was very low.
