No colour plates but still a delighted grandchild!
It’s the story we all know and love but in a smaller version! There’s a new(ish) foreword, which I hadn’t seen before and none of the colour illustrations which I have in my own, older copies but otherwise it’s excellent. I must say that if I’d realised that it lacked the colour plates, I would have looked for another version and their lack is the only reason I’ve given it 4 stars instead of 5.The print is very small; rather than keeping the font size and adding pages, it has the same number of pages with a smaller font. Personally I would have struggled to read it but fortunately my grandchild has no such problems. The recipient claimed it was too big for a pocket but thanks to my raincoat I was able to demonstrate that it’s the perfect size, which made a great impression.

The Hobbit (pocket version) [Special Edition] [Hardcover]
The Hobbit (pocket version) I am not going to say if this book has a great story or not. This is not a blog to review the plot of a book, and furthermore a good story always depend on the reader. The book is small (pocket size), my hand is bigger than the book (I've a normal size hand). It fits perfectly in a small woman's purse. The only con is the size of the letters, they are tiny (normal size in a pocket book) so if you don't like books with tiny letters this book isn't for you.The hardcover is tough, simple and discrete: dark green with the title and author on the 'lateral' cover in golden letters. The dust jacket is beautiful (as you can see in the product image), and the papper is not very fragile.Has a Thoro's map at the beggining and the 'Wilderland' in the end of the book. I would like a bigger map, but is the pocket version and the places are legible and well drawn.Inside the book has some (6 or 7) hand drawn illustrations of places. They're beutifully drawn. It's a great detail about the book.I had no problems with the order and it arrived in 3 days (I am from Portugal).I would recommend it to anyone who likes pocket books and is a Tolkien fan. Splendid little book.
This is a review for 'The Hobbit: Pocket Version'. Very fast delivery on this book. It is a lovely size to hold and very comfortable. You can really see and feel the quality of this little book, inside there are a few pages written by Christopher Tolkien on how 'The Hobbit' came to be, a very interesting read it was. If you, like me, prefer to remove the dust jacket whilst reading it, then it reveals a lovely green hardback cover, with details written in gold, very fitting for a book of this nature. This may be a gripe to some, not to me, but I will tell it none the less for whom it may concern; The pages are rather thin and the ink can rub quite easily, now like I said this does not bother me as I have learnt to keep my fingers away from the text, and I am glad for thin pages as it makes for a thinner book! they are not of bad quality mind. There are only black and white artworks in this version. All in all I am more than pleased with my purchase and will be using this version to re-read nearer to when the movie reaches us next year!

Nearly but not quite a 5 star rating...
Unlike other reviews here my edition of this book does have the black and white illustrations inside so I can't fault it for that, in fact I find very little to fault in this edition other than the size of the text which is a little on the small side and perhaps too close to the margin, but then this keeps the page count down ;-) I would find the size of type a little hard on the eyes if I were reading for a prolonged period though. I don't suppose anyone really needs another review of the actual contents of the book? But if you collect Tolkien books or have an interest in them I'd say this is worth buying.
