A great show which, 50 years on, still beats most of what's made for TV today
I'm actually old enough to remember when this show was first aired in the UK in the early 60s. I loved it. This blu-ray box set, however, was bought for my 20-something daughter who is, like me, a sci-fi/fantasy nut and had been reading about The Twilight Zone online. We've been watching it with my 20-something son and all three of us are enjoying it.The writing, often by show creator, Rod Serling, still comes across as wittier and more intelligent than most TV shows before or since. There's a good mix of straight sci-fi and fantasy, most stories falling into the latter category. One of the remarkable things about the show is the way it tackles subjects most shows avoided, like prejudice, Communist paranoia and nuclear war. Way ahead of its time. On the subject of prejudice, the use of black actors also seems well ahead of its time. Then there's the added fun of spotting early guest appearances by future mega-stars like Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Ron Howard, Lee Marvin, Vera Miles, Warren Oates, Robert Redford and Burt Reynolds, to name but a few. Loads of familiar faces from other 60s TV shows pop up too, including most of the casts of Star Trek and Batman. Even our very own Patrick McNee (John Steed in The Avengers) shows up. Some great old-timers are in evidence too, most poignantly, the legendary Buster Keaton, in a gorgeously-produced episode that allows him to relive a little of his silent screen super-stardom.Nostalgia abounds, but this show is much more than a nostalgia trip and a lot of quality acting. As said, it has tight, engaging story-telling from Serling and his fellow writers, including Richard Matheson. More than that, the black-and-white cinematography is really excellent, with sharp contrast and the picture quality crystal clear, amazingly so for a show of this vintage. Kudos to the clean-up team. The restored sound also comes across as clearly as any present-day production. There are lots of interesting extras too, including masses of cast and crew interviews, commentary tracks and much more. All in all this box set is an absolute treat for anyone who likes classic sci-fi and fantasy. The only thing that feels oddly old-fashioned about it is that, when Rod Serling, who introduces each story, returns at the end to do his trailer for next week's episode, he sometimes goes into a cigarette commercial. At the time, of course, this was perfectly fine, but looked at now, it comes across as just plain weird!

Surely, One of the greatest tv shows of all time.
I used to watch this in the late '70s when i was about 9 years old and then again about 20 years later. The 2 shows that really stuck with me all these years are Shadow Play and Five Characters in Search of an Exit and it was great watching them again.I've just finished watching series 3 and i am now looking forward to series 4.I know when i have finally watched every episode, i will go back to series 1, episode 1 and start all over again.I highly recommend this box set of 156 episodes of some of the greatest television ever made.Rod Serling, the man behind the show, was a true genius. He wrote the majority of the shows, with some help from the likes of Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont and other writers.I can't recommend this highly enough.Arrived on time and in great condition by Amazon.

If you like 1950s/1960s American TV Shows
If, like me, you remember it being on TV and you like 1950s/1960s America then buy it. Don't think it's all about aliens and the future. It isn't. It's more about "What if this happened.."You may, as I do, finish watching an episode and thinking "Where have I seen that actor/actress before?"
