Q: Do you use this oil on wet stones?

You use this oil on oil stones. Then the metal particles float away. You do not use water on oil stones. Water would prevent the oil from soaking into the stone. Water would also likely oxidize the sharp blade. Oil stones are not "wet" stones, they are whetstones. Whet means to sharpen. A particular type of whetstone that uses water is a Japanese water stone, which uses water as a lubricant.

Q: I heard you use any kind of cooking oil instead on your wet stones. is it true? I've done it a few times because vegi or canola is way cheaper

Proper honing oil should be thinner (i.e. less viscous) than the standard Walmart/drug store mineral oil. However, if you insist on buying standard mineral oil, then thin it 50/50 with mineral spirits to make it the proper viscosity. Of course, you will end up with a quart of thinned mineral oil which should last you about 200 years.

Yes. Lubrication removes the waste metal so that the edge of the cutting tool is kept clear and efficient. Secondly the lubricant cools the edge where the the cutting is taking place. This prolongs the life of the cutting tool and maintains the mechanical properties of the steel being sharpened i.e. stops the metal from being annealed or aged. (I am an electrical engineer and borrowed this from a mechanical engineer who is not an expert in grinding, but this seems to make sense . . . clean the oil off of the knife well before using for food.)
