Great when paired w/the primary Gourmet BBQ System SS grates!
**UPDATE: 7/28/2018 The grate had to be thrown out after 4 years due to the porcelain cracking severely and iron rusting through, but that's after grilling a steak on it almost weekly. I brushed it each use, but never took it off and really cleaned it, and I failed to oil it after the first 6 months. Considering all that, I feel it was well worth the money spent. Had I regularly cleaned and oiled it, I imagine it would be in fine shape. While the stainless insert works, it doesn't sear nearly as well as this cast iron so I'm considering buying a new one. I now reverse sear our steaks, first cooking on my pellet smoker to ~120 degrees, then searing on the Weber to 130 or so. Perfect! Purchased the Weber BBQ System Sear Grate after ordering, but before receiving, the BBQ System Stainless Steel grates for my Genesis E-310. I was replacing the porcelain cast iron cooking grates that came with my Genesis, but lasted only 1.5 years before corroding and rusting out. I could have replaced them under Weber's 5 year warranty on the grates, but wanted to change to stainless steel for durability. However, I liked the heat and cooking of cast iron. When I saw the Gourmet BBQ System it seemed like the possibility of having the best of both worlds. Both the stainless steel primary grates and this cast iron sear grate are excellent so far. While I've only used them a few times the sear grate works exactly as I had hoped - perfectly searing my meats with great grill marks, and honestly, I cook steaks on the sear grate completely. Only other meats do I first sear, then move to another area of the grill onto the stainless steel surface. I did take a little extra step and season the cast iron sear grate in the oven for an hour before first use, and will probably continue to at least oil my meats before grilling, and perhaps add some oil to the sear grate direction (after cooking) at times to try and help fight off any moisture and maximize its longevity. I love the idea of Weber's Gourmet BBQ System, the high-quality stainless steel main grates, this cast iron sear grate, and I hope to try a couple of the other inserts as well. Bravo Weber - job well done (again)!

I used this for the first time last night. OMG, this thing is amazing. Took a temp reading off it with my IR thermometer. It was above 700 degrees. Gave amazing grill marks and a perfect sear. Steaks were medium rare and juicy as hell. Great crust on outside. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars.

Money well spent
Gets better with every cook, assuming it is properly seasoned and maintained. Only complaint? I wish it was the entire cooking surface instead of just the center insert. Definitely my personal favorite of all available inserts for this wonderful Weber Master Touch wood/charcoal grill. A purchase you surely won’t regret.

It's not magic, but it's still great
I have this sear grate paired with a Weber Master Touch kettle grill, and I think some people will rightly tell you that it's kind of a silly thing to buy with a charcoal grill. Charcoal grills, after all, can easily get up to 700F degrees, which is plenty hot to sear meat just from the radiant temperature. This is *mostly* for you gas grillers out there. Since gas grills have trouble getting above 500F, they can struggle to lay down a good sear before the meat overcooks, particularly if you're grilling a thick cut. By pre-heating these sear grates with your cover down, you gas grillers can get a good, consistent sear on. And for that purpose, this dense grate is, well, great. It stores a bunch of heat and transfers it quickly. So, why did I buy this? Look, let's be honest here, this is about cosmetics. Sear marks look awesome. They're a fantastic look on a steak. And if, you do it it, you can two slightly different levels of sear going: a "crispy" sear on the grills marks combines with a all over sear from the ambient temperature. This gives your steaks a very slight flavor variation, especially if you are salting the meat before you put it on. But are these grates necessary for a good sear? If you're cooking with charcoal, they are not. (As a caveat to all the above, I will add that if you are cooking something thin, like say a butterflied chicken breast or a thin burger, these grates will allow you to put way more sear on them than ambient cooking would without overcooking--but that you should eat more steaks, anyway.) Construction is what you expect: heavy. I've used them a few times now, and they seem durable. Clean isn't too bad since the grate spacing is wide, it's pretty easy to knock off hangers. I think these are a fun upgrade for standard charcoal grill, and they let you show off a little. Which, if I'm being honest, is definitely one of the best parts about hosting a BBQ to begin with.

If you like charcoal grilling, the cast-iron insert improves upon the taste and look of your food.
It’s a replacement for the prior grill that rusted away after 14 years. If you like charcoal grilling, the cast-iron insert improves upon the taste and look of your food. Have used it for many years.

It works, Weber quality!
This searing grate fits my Weber Master Touch grill perfectly. Very heavy and quality porcelain/enamel coating. Be sure to get the coals hot as possible and heat it directly up as much as possible and coat your beef with cooking oil of some type. I seared first and then indirectly cooked the remaining time but you can reverse that order both with good results. Do not scrub with a metal bbq brush, just soak when cool with Dawn liquid soap and use a gentle bristle brush. Highly recommend this product.

I bought this to use after cooking my steak via sous-vide. I placed this grate on top on a charcoal chimney starter and waited for the charcoal to heat up. Ended up with a great crust and perfect grill marks. Easy to clean....after it cools down. ;-)

My husband (who is the one who uses it) absolutely loves this insert into our bbq grill. It's heavy and provides a robust cooking surface and fits perfectly into the lighter outer grill. Very pleased.
