A classic at a bargain price.
I really loved this book..When I read it for the first time I must admit I didn't really concentrate enough on all the various threads, primarily because I understood this book to have been written for children. If that's the case then children of yesteryear needed great powers of concentration and memory because this book contains a not insignificant role of exotic cast members and you do need to keep your wits about you as to who is in cahoots with who.Having read it through once I then immediately read it again with greater care and really really enjoyed it.Kipling has a keen eye and can brilliantly evoke a scene and atmosphere.I shall be buying more.

Highly recommended
First time I have read Kipling, and am greatly impressed. He is certainly a master storyteller, and there are passages of beautiful prose. He creates a large canvas of India's sprawling continent and the diversity of its people and customs at the end of the 19th century. Presently about two thirds of the way through. The Puffin edition is first rate with comfortable font size and plenty of background information about the author, India at that time and the effects of empire plus a good introduction by S. Cooper.
