Fantastic book of experience!
I really enjoyed this book! Itโs about the day to day nitty gritty struggles we all would have chasing our dream and also trying to make ends meet! The author writes the book in such a way that you feel like youโre sat in the pub or front room talking to him! Iโve just ordered Garyโs other book, โKarate doesnโt work in a phone boxโ.

A great read
I really enjoyed this book. Bought it and started reading it at about 3am and finished about 12 hours later at 3pm. It combined many elements, an overview of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu history, an overview of the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the UK and the authors struggle to learn the art in those early days.Gary very well articulates the challenges that he faced and they are easy to relate to as many students today still struggle with similar difficulties. But by describing how he overcame these obstacles and progressed, he offers hope to many who feel that their training has plateaued.A funny, informative and motivating page turner.

One man's Jiu Jitsu journey
Read this excellent book by my very good friend and old school BJJ'er Gary Savage in two sessions :)Like Gary, I'm an old school dinosaur and the book resonates with me on many levels, especially the struggles of finding a BJJ black belt to teach Up North, it was either Birmingham or London in the early days and back then you HAD to travel! That's why many of us old schoolers get so annoyed when people ring you up enquiring about a class, ask where you are based and then say 'ooh you're a bit too far for me!'The book is packed full of names and charcaters from the early days, sadly some of them no longer with us, plus tales from the Wolsflair, the Mecca of NW MMA, where I did a lot of training pre and post UFC 75, when Bisping nailed MMA to the NW flag, plus lots of other milestone events in the early days of UK BJJ.BJJ is everywhere in the UK; white belts now have instant access to high level black belt tuition from Day One, something the likes of Gary, myself and many other old schoolers never had.If it wasn't for people like Gary, with their quench for learning and passing their learning on, the UK BJJ scene wouldn't be like it is as it is today.Give it a read and learn about the early days of pyjama fighting :)Carl FisherBJJ black beltWimbledon BJJ

Fantastic read ๐๐๐๐๐
Ive read alot of books on BJJ and the history. This is definitely my favourite book so far. The stories are both funny and real life while also showing the struggles of trying to learn BJJ back in the day (i know ive been there too) Thank you for this honest and entertaining read Gary. Keep the books coming ๐

Couldnโt put it down!
Read the whole book in one go yesterday.I thought it was well written, typically British humour, and being from the same era, albeit in Judo, very relatable.Definitely a good read!

A Pleasant Easy Read
This is an interesting read if you know the BJJ and Grappling scene - it is not as reflective as other personal journey being more descriptive than incite full.It is an easy read which is a plus and knowing the characters of the area for me enjoyable - identifying the Marlborough Man because I know the situations and the era slowed me to add colour when reading the author misses making the book in many ways two dimensional. When compared to other autobiographical BJJ books this lack the personal reflection and personal impact that BJJ have on the author that many others books have.Whilst creating a penned outline of grappling in the North of England it doesnโt colour the characters venues and clubs as much as it could have done.Which if you know the people the areas and the unique environment of North West is a missed opportunity.Itโs a nice read and an addition to many BJJ Libaries - following in the trend of others it fails in reaching its full potential.

A must read for any JiuJitsu practitioner
What a great book, from someone who struggles to finish any book I could not put this down. I read from cover to cover every free moment I had. Gary writes this as itโs written by a friend the story is easy to follow and very funny. This is a book that every JiuJitsu enthusiast should own. I am very much looking forward to his next release ๐ค๐ผ๐ฅท๐ค๐ผ๐ค๐ผ
