Q: Can these brushes be used for varnishing?

You could and I have to apply base coats. I throw away rather than clean the brush and use a quality brush for final coat which I do clean.

Q: can these be used for oil based paint? or just for water based paint?

Yes. But as for any brush on an oil based product, it is best to dilute the paint with mineral spirits first to minimize brush marks.

Q: What is the % of polyester/nylon filaments?

Not on packaging or website so I don't know. You can email their support and maybe they will tell you. Sorry I can't help more. They are a great "cheap" brush for water based paint.
