PENGUIN Key Words: 3b Boys and girls

My siblings and I all used the Ladybird Peter and Jane series to learn how to read English as a second language, uh, 30+ years ago, and I just had to get them for my son now because I know how I was taught using these books and know it is a tried and proven method and series of booklets. I was so happy to find they were available on Amazon NEW for a reasonable price! They still look old school and exactly like the ones I remember. My husband thought it was crazy that I was getting what looks like outdated art and reading material and questioned my purchase in the beginning, but he can't argue the fact that his very young son is reading now and doing so well with phonics! I don't buy the green "c" books for these though, as I never used them because you have to write in them, and there were so many of us siblings. My son is learning to read just fine without them. I still can't believe I was able to get the whole series on Amazon! Love it!

Although the illustrations are a bit old- fashioned and there is definitely a girl/boy divide in the story lines, these books are so valuable for practising key words and building reading skills. Has Ladybird considered updating them? My little boy actually picks these up voluntarily! The size is just right for little hands too.

Key Words from Series 1 (a,b,c) thru 12(a,b,c) are excellent way to teach and develop reading skills in Children. I have tried many books but my children never shown interest to read on their own. After I got the Key Words series, they have developed lots of interest to read on their own. These books very systematically introduce few words repeatedly in each book. Which help the children to remember the words after reading the story. While 'c' series basically an exercises and recapture from the story of the books in 'a' & 'b'. Before starting these books (but not necessary) I would recommend to teach your kids 'Sight Words', I liked Flash kids Flash cards which covers all basic sight words. I wish I could have discovered this when my kids are 4 years old. But better late than never. Thanks Srinivas
