Safely charming
I read James Hilton's Goodbye, Mr. Chips as a high school student in the 1970s. I read it after reading and loving his Lost Horizon. I enjoyed Goodbye, Mr. Chips, but not as much.Mr Chips is Mr Chipping, a beloved teacher at the fictional Brookfield English Public school. (Note: what the English of that time called a "public school" is what we in the USA call a "private school" -- that is, a place where parents pay money to have their children educated.) There's also a love story in there. As a young teacher, Mr Chipping meets and falls in love with a young woman, whom he marries. She's one of these "modern" young women, for 1930s values of "modern", and Chipping's colleagues are not sure at first if she's a suitable partner for a public school master.I like my books a little dangerous. For instance, a book in which spiders are heroes, or a book whose hero is a difficult, unpleasant little girl. Goodbye, Mr. Chips is the opposite of dangerous. Many people who read books for pleasure remember a favorite schoolteacher. And if the schoolteacher falls in love with a pretty young woman, that's sure to be a crowd-pleaser!Now, many readers have loved Goodbye, Mr. Chips, and they're not wrong! You're right to love what you love. For me, though, Hilton is too obviously playing it safe in Goodbye, Mr. Chips.

the short version
The book is short since it was a short piece Mr. Wilson wrote for a local publication, then you must see the movie, the expansion of the brief first piece is incredible. What I found interesting is how it launched both Mr. Wilson an Robert Donat's careers onto the national scene. The movie expands to a degree and is my favorite movie I think I have ever seen.

A classic
A book that is very dated, very English with unfamiliar terms to Americans, but sweet and readable. A classic

A noble, unforgettable tale of human values
The story of Chips is a lovable story, whether in the form of the movie or the book. I saw the movie first, and so expected the book might suffer by comparison (we often prefer the format we encounter first). But the book is just as good, a story of a modest school master whose life is ennobled by the honest values he lives by.It is a sad yet uplifting story, that lingers in the back of the mind for years. Indeed, particularly-moving scenes from Goodbye Mr Chips flash back from time to time, just as old memories , the best of memories, flashed back for Chips. This is an unforgettable tale of humanity at its best, a tale to be cherished.

souvenir d'enfance

The Complete Mr Chips
This omnibus edition contains James Hilton's classic Goodbye Mr Chips (1933) and the lesser known follow up - one can't really call it a sequel - To You, Mr Chips (1938)The former is illustrated (with some of the images being specific to the marvelous and unjustly neglected 1969 film version with Peter O'Toole and Petula Clarke!)The latter book contains a chapter of autobiographical material relating to Hilton's own schooldays and his thoughts on the English public school system and how the world he knew was about to be changed by the coming shadow of WW2. The remaining chapters are additional stories about Chips, the legendary acting headmaster of Brookfield School, and are largely concerned with Chips' deep psychological understanding about what makes a boy tick. Most poignant of all is the last story in which Chips attempts to cheer up the boys during the dark days of 1917 as the horrors of the first world war loom ever larger, by organising a lavish Christmas party. Alas a flu epidemic puts paid to his plans, and as the school breaks up early for an extended holiday, the boys are delighted, while poor Chips is left to contemplate a lonely Christmas at Brookfield. Not earth-shaking stuff, but a pleasant and enjoyable read for anyone who has loved the original novel or any of the film and TV adaptations that have been made over the years.
