Behavioral Intervention for Young Children With Autism: A Manual for Parents and Professionals: 9780890796832: Medicine & Health Science Books @ desertcart.com Review: Easy to use curriculum guide. - There's a lot of material in this book that is great, from treatment planning to how to recruit employees. There are even flow charts for helping to make behavior intervention decisions, and lots of general use data sheets. What I get most out of it is the lesson planning material, this book is full of examples of targets for each skill. There's a section on beginning, intermediate and advanced curricula, which can be used on their own, or with other curriculum guides, and each entry is provided a program guide with specific targets, and a print out for the program's data taking. I can print it out, when my assessments indicate the program is called for, and hand it to the interventionist so they have the directions, too. Review: Awesome Book - I love the book, the descriptions of the goals are amazing. Great tool for a professional or a parent.

Great for ABA
I'm a BCBA and this book is now my new treatment Bible. I love how it breaks down each target and teaching instructions.

Excellent source for parents and professionals
I would highly recommend this book for parents and professionals who want to learn more about ABA for a child in their lives or to implement ABA in the classroom. I am using it to enhance the direct instruction I am receiving from a BCBA to train me to use ABA intervention for my son with Autism. It came highly recommended by the professionals I know and has been an invaluable wealth of information.

Use this immediately after a diagnosis
Once you get a firm autism diagnosis for your nonverbal to little-more-than-nonverbal child, you will begin a slow process of finding out information, finding services, applying for services, figuring out insurance coverage (or most likely lack thereof). You will eventually become well-versed on a number of therapies, all of them useful, all of them somewhat related to the technique in here, ABA through discrete trial. Of the many books I have, this is the one that will allow you to give therapy to your child the quickest. The book will tell you exactly what to do and how to do it, and it is a great place to start. I also advice you to find out about Pivotal Response Training, which is extremely straightforward, and a great way to get those first words out and to provide training in non-therapeutic situations. That said, once you've set up this program, and I guarantee it will be quick, I recommend looking into Verbal Behavior, which is in my opinion much more thorough than what is provided here (unfortunately, I have not found any "recipe-style" book for VB). Also you will want to find a good ABA provider, at the very least to provide you with supervision if you find out you cannot get any coverage and are forced to give the therapy yourself. Armed with this book you will have a good way to help your child, while you get situated. The diagnosis will be much more bearable if you start seeing progress in your child, and this can really help. Also, do yourself a favor and apply for a Medicaid waiver right away, because there may be long waiting lists, depending on your state, and Medicaid will cover things for your child private insurance will not.

Very complete presentation
I am the parent of an autistic adult daughter. This manual is written for the parent and the professional and offers much insight into early intervention. The almost 400 pages cover an extensive scope of information and suggestions devoted to teaching, motivating, programming, developing, assessing, tracking, measuring, resourcing, teaching skills, sleeping and eating disorders, and much much more. There is a wealth of information written here in an easy-to-understand presentation. I would highly recommend this manual for anyone interested in learning more.

Good for all children
I work with a variety of children with differing disorder. This book is great to have as a reference. I need to have as many different techniques as I possibly can because there is always "that child" that poses a problem. Would recommend this book to anyone who works with children or for parents as a resource for their own children.

This book helped me teach my child and truly made some life saving changes for him. It's a great book for the first programmes for young children or kids recently diagnosed. It's a comfort to know that severely affected children have a great ability to learn.

The main thing I liked about this book is that there was a suggested curriculum and sample programs. However, much of the book was about defending ABA and discrediting other treatment options, and then how to go about hiring people to work with your child. I would have preferred more details about specific problems than can arise within programs and suggestions to overcome these. I'm glad I bought it but I would have liked less blah blah and more examples of how to actually go about applying and refining the programs.
