Love this book!
Love this book! My favorite little red hen book, aside from the original of course. LOVE using it for my preschool classroom when we compare and contrast the different versions because it only has a rooster and mouse that don't help. Doesn't seem like much for some people but I haven't came across one yet that only has two additional characters aside from the hen. AMAZING for something different to read and see if the kids can catch that there are only two additional characters themselves and brainstorming reasons on why there were only two when there's normally 3 in every other one. LOVE the CD too! AND love that they all help to grow the wheat and remake the bread in the end! Pictures are unique too! Picture uploaded is of the sweet ending.

A lesson in restitution!
I bought this for the children I work with - I'm a nanny. I'll update this review once they've tried it out, but so far I've just read it through myself to see what kind of version it is. There's one thing that really stands out more than anything else. the Little Red Hen only finds ONE grain of wheat, and so obviously up comes ONE stalk of grain. That is clearly not enough to get enough flour to bake a whole loaf of bread. She must have an unusually charitable miller! Maybe she's always doing him special favours.Aside from that, this version differs from some others in that it doesn't stop at the end when the Little Red Hen says "Then I'll eat it myself!" This book repeats the whole story over again, showing that the lazy animals have learnt their lesson. So the second time through they all plant the grain, they all water the grain, they all harvest the grain etc and then they all eat the bread. So I suppose even though that's not the traditional version, it does show children the consequences of selfishness and that one can learn from poor behaviour to do better next time, given another chance. It takes them through step-by-step what to do to put right their mistakes.

The story in its self is good, remember it from when I was young but ...
Got this version of the book as the picture looked most appealing. The story in its self is good, remember it from when I was young but the illustrations aren't as eye catching. My three year old boy loves books but this one he was quite uninterested.
