Yes, the edges are graded or gravely but the center is smooth

They are flat-ish. They have design highlights that make the top look like they have panels. If you have something on top (like a magazine) they would work, but just a piece of paper and pen/pencil, I would say no. The picture that someone posted (above reviews) gives a great view of what the top looks like.

How many 8x10 photographs will it hold?

I do apologize but I didn’t use my for photos I put newspapers in mines I think it held two whole papers in each I think one I put 3 cause they were small I do hope that helped

Can a newspaper fit in this case?

You would more than likely have to fold it up, but I think it could fit. This holds a stack of 8.5x11" paper nicely.
