Reliable, Smart, and Easy to Use: Aqara Motion Sensor P1 Exceeds Expectations
I’ve been using the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 for a few months now, and it’s been a fantastic addition to my smart home setup. The installation was a breeze—no tools required, just stick it up with the included adhesive and you’re good to go. The detection range is impressive: up to 7 meters at 150°, and even wider at closer distances, so it easily covers my hallway. I also love the built-in light sensor, which means my lights only turn on when it’s actually dark and someone walks by—super handy for saving energy. Integration with my smart home was seamless. It works perfectly with HomeKit and Alexa, and automations are easy to set up. I use it to trigger lights depending on light levels, and it hasn’t missed a beat. Overall, the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 is reliable, flexible, and packed with features that make it a must-have for anyone looking to automate their home. Highly recommended!

Great PIR motion sensor with light sensor
I've had this up in my house for just over a year now. It's small enough to be discreet when placed in the corner of a ceiling and nice and easy to position with its moveable attachment to its base. I have this connected to home assistant via a sonoff zigbee dongle plus and ZHA. It integrated very quickly and has been working flawlessly since installation. The entities exposed are shown in the attached picture. I particularly like the fact that its got a built in light sensor which I use for a lot of my light automations to determine when its dark enough to require lights to turn on. The product description says that it has a 5 year battery life. Mine has been up for almost exactly 12 months and the battery is now reading 70% having started at 100%. Of note, it's in a very high traffic area of the house and looking through the past data, it went from 100% to 60% in the first 2 months. It's then mysteriously gone from 60% to 70% over the following 10 months....so who knows! Its quite a bit more expensive than the sonoff motion sensors, but I think the light sensor and ability to easily alter its position make up for this.

Good but not as accurate as hoped
Easy to manage and setup with Home Assistant via Zigbee2MQTT. Much smaller item than it looks in the images and great battery life. My issue I've found is I'll quite often end up with the occupancy clearing when someone is present. This may be because I'm using it in a small room (ensuite) and need to adjust positioning but I have yet to find a sweet spot where it is accurate

Accurate and sensitive.
This is a great bit of kit, I use it in my workshop, meaning I don't have to put dirty fingers all over light switches to turn lights on or to run the fan when it's hot and someone is in there for more than 5 minutes.

Great for smart home setups
These are great for a smart home and are very easy to setup up and work very well with alexa for making your own routines

Ok but battery life not as advertised
I currently have 3 of these P1 motion sensors, they work ok but don't believe the hype with the 5 year battery life rubbish Just over 1 year after purchasing my 1st one one had completely failed due to low battery and another keeps going into low battery alert Another issue with these is changing the setting Once you power them up and do the initial setting up if you need to do any tweaks you generally find any setting changes like sensitivity or time out settings will fail unless you press the button on the back. A lot easier said than done when it's mounted high on the wall

Have many of these sensors becuase they are brilliant
Use these inexpensive and feature packed reliable sensors as part of my home security system and home automations. These integrate easily and reliably to the Zigbee service in Home Assistant. Originally I used these in the Aqara App, but found them much more useful when adding directly in to Home Assistant rather than being exposed to home assistant through the Aqara App. Good respoinse time and great value for money

Rock solid with ZHA in Home Assistant
Rock solid with ZHA in Home Assistant, or you can use them through the M3 Aqara hub in Home Assistant also. These are my go-to Motion sensors. It is worth noting that, over the years, I've had one or two fail on me, hence the 4 stars; however, overall, Aqara products are excellent.

This is a pretty good motion sensor. Time will tell with the battery life, but overall I am pleased. TLDR; THE GOOD: - You CAN pair with Home Assistant directly if you have a Zigbee coordinator - Fast and responsive at detecting motion - Good field-of-view - There is a built-in illuminance sensor if you want to create automations based on the brightness of the room - Pretty much all THE NOT AS GOOD: - Pairing was a little clunky - even with the first-party hub - Home Assistant is not able to detect the firmware version GOOD TO KNOW: - You don't need the first-party Aqara hub to use this device, but you do need some kind of Zigbee coordinator - You loose some functionality if you don't use the first-party Aqara hub. - Unlike some of Aqara's other products (FP2, FP1E, etc.) this is NOT an 'occupancy' sensor - it is a motion sensor. This means that while it's good for transitional spaces (like hallways or laundry rooms), you probably DON'T want to rely on it to detect people sitting still. - If you are pairing with Home Assistant via Zigbee it exposes a 'Motion' entity and an 'Occupancy' entity. The Occupancy entity never seems to clear (at least for me) so I just disabled it. The Motion entity works great and is the one you want to base your automations around. FULL REVIEW PAIRING WITH AQARA M3 HUB: I started by pairing the P1 with Aqara's first-party M3 hub. Paring was a little clunky only because you have to be VERY close to the hub for the initial pairing to work at all. Once paired you can move the sensor a lot further from the hub (more on connectivity later) but it seems like it might initially provision the device using Bluetooth, so I had to basically be in the same room for the device to pair properly. After that, pairing was totally fine. CONNECTIVITY I have the Aqara hub and the sensor 2 floors away (the P1 is in the basement laundry room which is also has all the utilities, so basically the worst case scenario for connectivity). I had one day when I noticed the connection dropping, but generally I was impressed with it's ability to remain connected to the Aqara hub given how challenging the set up was. If I moved the hub to a more central location or added an Aqara product that could act as a Zigbee repeater I feel confident that I wouldn't have any problems (most of Aqara Zigbee products that connect to mains power can act as repeaters - light bulbs, LED strip lights, smart plugs, smart wall switches, etc.). FORM FACTOR The form factor of the P1 is a little weird. On the one hand, having the swivel-neck mount gives you lots of options for position, but it makes it pretty noticeable. There are definitely better options if you want a discreet look. The adhesive that it comes with to stick to the wall / ceiling is also VERY strong. This is great for stability, but it will almost definitely damage a painted surface if you try to reposition it (I ended up using a Command Strip instead to make repositioning easier in the future). The way the sensor connects to the base is also a little weird. There is this 'togue-and-groove' system that makes it very easy to remove the sensor from the base (to replace the battery for example) without removing the stand for wherever it is adhered to, but it's a little tricky to get back on correctly. PAIRING WITH HOME ASSISTANT If you don't have an Aqara hub you can pair the P1 directly to Home Assistant using the Zigbee coordinator of your choice (I'm using the ZH1). There was one very weird issue though, and some missing functionality. - As mentioned, an 'Occupancy' entity gets exposed to Home Assistant. I was never able to get this entity to report as 'clear' - it only ever showed 'detected', so I just disabled it. This was a little weird and could be confusing (maybe the P1 shares some firmware with their MMWave sensors which DO detect occupancy?). The 'motion' entity that gets exposed works really well. - The built in lux sensor gets exposed to Home Assistant with no problems - The battery percentage took some time, but eventually was exposed to Home Assistant correctly - Detection interval, LED trigger indicator, and Motion sensitivity are all exposed properly through just the regular old Zigbee integration (I'm not currently using ZigbeeToMQTT or anything fancy) - The firmware version is NOT currently being detected, but I will update this review if it eventually gets picked up correctly. Overall, this has been a pretty good motion sensor. I've had some minor but understandable connection issues, but generally it performs the primary function of detecting motion very well and I really like that, since it uses Zigbee you are not stuck in Aqara's ecosystem if you have a more bespoke set-up. Great job Aqara!

Aqara provides a great piece of hardware for a great price. It has become a go to line for me that integrates seamlessly with Home Assistant. I installed one unit in the center of a 2-car garage. It monitors doors on both sides perfectly. Thanks!
