Better than the original
When I originally picked up sensation I thought it was a clever idea that succeeded in capturing my attention and keeping it throughout Jim's original journey. The characters were interesting and while they were never fully fleshed out we knew enough about them to relate to them. Mutation picks up several weeks after the end of Sensation and not only captures the magic of the original, but surpasses it.The first thing that helped Mutation was the additional length which allowed for more character development. In Mutation we get a deeper look into the characters introduced in Sensation and learn more about there hopes and fears. While I would personally like to see the individual personalities fleshed out to a greater extent it did not detract in the slightest from my enjoyment of mutation. Mr. Hardman accomplishes this by having a writing style that gives a near constant stream of action to captivate the reader. While, as I mentioned earlier, I noticed the lack of character interaction it was simply a thought in the back of my mind as I read on to see how Jim would get out of this latest mess.I think the one thing the Kid Sensation series could benefit from is more conversations between characters in a non critical setting. Basically have more situations between Jim and the other characters that give similar character development to Jim's date with Electra (to clarify I mean the first one the novel talks about). I loved the original Sensation novel and have found Mutation to surpass the original. I greatly look forward to reading Jim's next adventure.

Surprisingly good sequel
if I was to complain about this book it would be that its so short that some sub-plots get dropped far too quickly. This story surprised me quite a bit. The first one was not bad, but always felt like some of the plot was forced. This time Kevin Hardman didn't force the storyline and instead wrote a good super hero action/mystery with mostly believable characters. Many of the characters being introduced were well thought out and the solutions to the problems weren't simply the "bring a bigger hammer" types. My only real complaint would be that the story does end up a bit emotionless. Not that it doesn't bring out emotions, but that the romantic subplots and building of friendships quickly ended up swept away by the latest "the world is about to end" crisis that forms the backbone of the book. This left me wishing I could see a bit more of certain characters who didn't get enough page time.Still a solid story.

Really Good Series and this book holds up
Before I really go into my review I would like to point out that I rarely review software and reading material/books. I believe that both areas are VERY subjective as to what works and what doesn't for each person so what might be a great choice for me might actually be a disaster for someone else. That said occasionally I do break down and decide to rate something that I found especially enjoyable. That is the case with not only this book but ALL the rest of the books in this series. Which is what prompted me to do this review. I actually thought all the stories in this series have been pretty well thought out and the issues that have cropped up have been very consistent with the types of issues you would find in superhero-based graphic novels so the books work really well with the theme. I also appreciate how well thought out the descriptions of the powers used by the various characters and how and why they work the way they do. It makes reading these books quite enjoyable (for me).

Solid Outing!
Let me preface this by noting that while I liked it, I wasn't as taken with this book as with Mr. Hardman's first one. It was good, but not AS good.I find I rather enjoyed Hardman's characterization in book one. Book two, however, having introduced the main cast of characters in the prior work, spends a lot less time introducing others. Characters are rather flat and one-dimensional outside of the main cast, something that was not true in Hardman's first book. So . . . with that criticism, why did I give it a four? Hardman still prepares a good story, raises some interesting questions, and made for a fun read.Let me merely say that I would be willing to invest in book 3. :) After all, review aside, I think that's truly the selling point!

Like it, but annoyed at illogical behavior by Characters
I am conflicted about this one. The story is good, writing is good, BUT - the characters stretch my incredulity too much by NOT using their powers ...<MILD SPOLIER ALERT>Still here?OK.So we are to believe that a "government" agency (presumably US) takeshostile acts towards the hero, and he does NOT use his powers in full todefend himself.Worse, we are asked to believe that this "rogue" agency attacks and triesto kill a large number of superpowered children, many of whom have super-poweredparents.After the attack is foiled all of these Superheroes do ... NOTHING ?!Seriously?Even if we are to believe that due to ethical reasons they decide not toretaliate by force (and they could do it easily, and in ways that can't bedetected and proven), Wouldn't a super-powered group of Teenagers who were attacked,or their parents, use their powers to expose the "rouge" agency? They don't even go on strike in offering super-powered services to the worlduntil the people responsible for the attack are stopped from any further action?I am willing to suspend disbelief that Super Heroes (and Villains) exist, but to believe they are all wimps?! even in the face of assassination attemptson their kids?Come on.

I bougth the sequel as soon as it came out
The story didnt quite live up to the promise of the first Kid Sensation book, which is a must-read before moving on to this sequel. Some of the elements of novelty and ingenuity from the first story just didnt quite carry through, but that made this story good instead of excellent. It was well edited, of reasonable length and featured an interesting, unique story with many of the elements of style that made the first book so interesting. When Amazon emailed me to say that the sequel had been published I bought it instantly. Four stars is an absolute rating, but in value for money, if you like this sort of thing in the first place, it's a great bet.
