I really look forward to reading this book to my grandsons and telling them a bit more about the beautiful country of Nepal and the lovely people that live there. I love the illustrations in this book by Bandana Tulachan. I was a bit disappointed that more wasn't explained about her in the book or on the Amazon description page. She is an artist from Kathmandu, Nepal. He illustrations of her countryman in this book are fantastic and really help bring the words to life. Having been to Nepal, I had a chance to build friendships with a few great folks from there, and some of them were Sherpas. What an amazing people. This short story is not super detailed but hopefully it can help wet the appetite of a couple of young explorers to want to learn more about Tenzing Norgay. I appreciate that the book highlights Tenzing's frustrations as well as his accomplishments. I also love that it tells the story of this Nepali climber rather than the story of the much more famous Westerner that he climbed with. We really need more books like this one.

This is a really nice book that kids should love. They’ll enjoy reading it, and learning at the same time. Though I’m quite familiar with Norgay’s story, even I learned a few things. The theme is very inspirational. Overall though, I did think the book could have been better. The writing is simple and straightforward. Yes, I realize it’s supposed to be simple and to the point for young children, but I thought it had sort of a textbook feel to it. I would have liked if it got a bit more personal, if it had something that would bring it more to life. Maybe some dialogue? Maybe a bit more personal stuff about Norgay’s life? Like the mention about Norgay getting one of his first gigs because the boss liked his smile. I loved that! I even looked it up to see if it was true and it is! It made me think that history could have been completely different if this guy hadn’t had such a commanding smile. I also thought that the illustrations fell a bit flat. They’re detailed, which I like, yet simple, which is fine for kids. But overall, the illustrations looked sort of subdued to me. For such a breathtaking part of the world, I really wanted the pictures to pop. Just my two cents. This is a very good book that, in my view, with some tweaking, could be excellent!
