Green Sphagnum moss is a non-vascular plant that grows all over the world in wet and marshy areas. It is highly valued as a substrate for growing moisture-loving plants such as carnivorous plants and orchids due to its ability to hold water and nutrients.

Good quality live sphagnum
March 2021: After seeing a wide range in experience with other reviewers I wanted to post my experience. The moss I received was in excellent condition and appears to the of the sphagnum genus advertised. I do not know exact species. Currently 30 days out from transplant into a new outdoor bog garden in USDA Zone 8b. Despite several cold nights (26-27F) since transplant the moss is still alive and well. Probably 95% of growing tops are still producing new growth. I will update this review if I experience any change but at this point my opinion is that the moss was delivered as promised and now I just need to not kill it.I had a very of small number of yet to be IDed little plants within the moss. Very easy to remove if needed. No visible pests.Just placed a second order for another bog garden that is going in next week.

Intended use
I don't know what I was expecting, but my intended use was to repot an orchid in the moss, as I had read the sphagnum moss complements the orchids and provides beneficial nutrients. Well the moss was not a thick lush mass of green, more like 50/50 green and brown. I spread it out in a container that is designed for starting seedlings and has a clear plastic lid. I also sat it outside during a rain storm to collect some rain water. The moss is doing well, very green and gaining height. It had a few weeds mixed in it, but those were easy to remove. I do not presently see how I am going to be able to put the moss in with the orchid and keep the moss alive, as I have also read how the moss must be kept moist or the heads will dry, die and growth stops. The moss looks great and so for now I am just keeping the moss in the seed starter container.

Not the same moss species advertised!
There are leaves and spiders in with this moss... Clearly not at all the same species of moss. AND it stinks like mold, which I have a medically confirmed allergy to! I am NEVER ordering plants from Amazon again! Clearly they just went into the woods and dug it out of their back yard! Beyond furious with this!***Update! This item sent me to the doctors where I was prescribed antifungal meds and antihistamine!!! I have no idea how this "company" can even be allowed to sell on Amazon! Because of this experience, I am canceling my Prime membership and only shopping at Target from now on where they actually care about and exercise quality control!***

The moss contained a lot of weeds and brown moss.
I received the sphagnum moss today (11-22-2021) and found it not to be as advertised. It wasn’t clean as showed in the pictures, rather it contained a lot of weeds and brown moss and some bugs. With a little cleaning, most of the moss was useable for what I needed it for. The good part about the order was, I received more moss than expected, so I'm semi happy with it.

Green and growing
I planted bits of this in boggy areas around my parents’ pond around Christmas, and even though I didn’t really know what the best locations for it would be, several of the places that I planted it are growing. A few places I planted it washed away due to extremely heavy rain and a couple of patches may not be doing too well due to the soil there not staying moist enough, but so far they keep peeking up after it rains.

High quality Sphagnum!
I received my moss in excellent condition with hardly any debris such as limbs or leaves. This is definitely a species of Sphagnum moss, probably Sphagnum centrale. The moss is very thick and green so it should grow just fine. The package I received filled a 1020 tray to capacity as shown in the photo. I highly recommend this seller!

Good but not cleaned as advertised
This is some quality sphagnum moss and a large amount of it. However it is not "HAND CLEANED,SINGLE STRANDS,NO DEBRIS" as it says in the intro. It comes straight from the habitat so it does have a fair amount of organic material and insects. You can just set it outside for a while and rough it up a little bit when it is warm to let the insects crawl out or just soak it yourself and pull strand by strand. Thats what I did. Then, with all the leftover muck and stuff, put in a separate container to act as a regeneration bed. It will grow.
