Not as far as I know - the product is designed with a one way valve system to strengthen inspiratory muscles so it's designed for breathing in. It does that very well, and the result should be more power breathing out.

The very basic answer to your question is that it works by restricting airflow thus forcing the pulmoary muscular system to work harder. As with all repeated muscular effort, if the muscles are challenged they respond with growth in capacity or put in a different way, their ablity to perform.Thus the breath trainer has a spring loaded syste that as you progress daily and the intial level becomes easier, you tighten the spring making the muscles work harder to get the same volume of oxygen. The more you do the better the capacity, however the trainer is merely an aide. To make real progess you need to also work the entire cardio vascular system oxygenating the blood and the body. I would suggest you incorporate this device, like I have done with treadmill, biking and sustained swimming. The benefits are dependant on regular use as part of a holyistic approach to fitness

I've been looking into buying one of these machines and as such I've been trying to ascertain the benefit. Dr. Mitch Lomax has researched the impact of this type of 'breathing exercise' and found that '5-7% improvement' is found in warming up prior to running and a '12% improvement' is found when inspiratory training is undertaken on its own and 15% when both warm up and training are used. These are fairly spectacular increases and I haven't read her research paper to see what state of fitness the runners were prior to the experiment (I would assume not high end athletes) - however it does indicate that warming up results in an improvement.
