First Comprehension Book 1: Year 2, Ages 6-7

Good variety of texts. Well worth it.
My 7 year old likes to read and his reading is above average for his age. But his reading interests are somewhat limited to stories and I also felt that he rushes through books without really thinking about them in sufficient depth. So I wanted something that will broaden his reading and compel him to really think about what he is reading. This book does that job really well. It has a good variety of texts including poetry and even an extract of an autobiography. It also has one text called "Dipping into the Dictionary" that provides examples of the layout of words and definitions on a dictionary page. The questions require careful consideration of the text. My son was initially a reluctant reader of poetry but now I feel he may even enjoy it a bit.The book does not contain any answers. So I also bought the teacher's guide. This book without the teacher's guide is useful enough but the combination makes this complete and helps get most out of it.One minor shortcoming of the booklet is the length of the texts. In KS1 SATs pupils are presented with longer texts than what's presented in this booklet. But I feel this is a deliberate choice made to keep the text to one page so the related questions could be on the following page on a two page spread. We have nearly finished this booklet and I have recently also bought "First Comprehension 2".We all rely on good reviews for online shopping. Good introduction to reading comprehension
The media could not be loaded.  I bought this book so my son could get used to reading more varied texts. He is a good reader but prefers dogman and comic books ideally. This book is giving him exposure to other interesting reading material. There is poetry, fiction, non fiction. The questions are quite straight forward but some you do have to think about. He is 7 year 2 and I thought it was perfectly pitched at his level. There are no answers in the book just questions but I also bought it for handwriting practice which this does in an engaging way. I don’t think you need the teachers guide really as the questions are pretty straight forward. I hope you found this review helpful.

My son is getting better and better.
A great book for practising comprehension. Even though it doesn't have any answers, the practise really helps. My son is six and can really read between the lines of text, thanks to this book. I'll keep him on the comprehension series which should really help with his 11+ prep.

My 6 year old has really enjoyed this comprehension book
My 6 year old has really enjoyed this comprehension book. It's been an excellent introduction for him to lots of different types of literature and I like that it's contained pieces of classic books like The Enormous Crocodile as well as some things that were new to us.There's often not quite enough space to write the answer to some of the questions, but at the same time it's good that the answers required are quite succinct and not too demanding of a 6 year old boy in terms of handwriting! He's looking forward to starting book 2.

Content and layout suitable for year 2 upwards. A balanced mix of poems and extracts both fiction and non fiction. Exerercises start with straightforward questions that can be answered directly from the text and then moves on to more probing ones about the interpreting meaning.
