Fantastic value collection that gives a very broad overview of Chris' best material
Chris De Burgh is probably the most unfairly maligned, misunderstood singer-songwriter of the past several decades. Possibly typecast as a romantic, slushy balladeer by huge hit The Lady In Red, not enough people will have checked out his larger catalogue and just how excellent his songwriting talent is. While I readily admit that people who only enjoy harder, more extreme forms of music are never going to be convinced to listen to Chris, those who enjoy melodic pop music with thoughtful, storytelling lyrics really should give him a fair hearing and, frankly, what better way to start than this low price, three CD collection? I readily admit that perhaps there is too much music on this collection, that maybe the quality is diluted a little bit by the massive 53-track offering, but it only takes a few listens to find the cream and to get a much better overview of De Burgh's songwriting ability and superb voice. What is, however, excellent about this collection is that the tracks represent his career well and, I believe, very fairly. I own many of his studio albums (and originally got into his work by purchasing the "A Spark To A Flame" compilation on cassette in the early nineties) and reckon this gives any new listener more than a decent idea of Chris' musical eclecticism and talent. It will either be all the Chris De Burgh someone will ever need, or it will be a springboard from which to dive in and explore his work in more depth. If you've never really heard any of Chris' music beyond, say, The Lady In Red, Missing You and his Christmas hit A Spaceman Came Travelling, I'd strongly recommend getting this collection and experiencing the superb richness of his material, such as Spanish Train, Borderline, Carry Me, The Snows Of New York and Don't Pay The Ferryman. Also, if it is big, beautiful love songs you're after, De Burgh really does hit the spot with crafted, heartfelt numbers like In Love Forever, Fatal Hesitation, Diamond In The Dark, Much More Than This, Tender Hands and so much more. If you have an open mind, a love of great melodies and genuine lyrics and, like Chris himself, rate classic pop artists such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Peter Gabriel, you could find so much to love here, just as I did several decades ago. Whilst not every track here is absolute solid gold, there is a whole lot more treasure than trash here and you may well be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY
Its been ages since I got Chris DeBurgh album. I thought I couldn't do any better than the TELSTAR compilation THE VERY BEST OF which came out on CD in 1985, albeit a very limited release and I would have been tempted to get a much deleted READER'S DIGEST compilation which came out in 2005, mainly for the German market. Trying to find a British Chris DeBurgh compilation that brings all the original classics up to date well, in this case 2001 and every track that you wanted and that you knew has been very hard and then suddenly, this mid-price cd appears (really, it's criminal that its so cheap for the amount of music on here). All the classics are here, the original PATRICIA THE STRIPPER, SPANISH TRAIN, HIGH ON EMOTION everything including the kitchen sink song LADY IN RED (sorry not my favourite but what did I want of a compilation, so shouldn't grumble). Worth every penny!
