East of Eden

SKIP JAMES DEAN'S VERSION; WATCH THIS ONE
Unlike the James Dean version, this DVD presents the entire plot of the novel. It matters very much in this case. Steinbeck's point is that we do not need to inherit "the sins of our fathers." _Timshel_ is the point. We can CHOOSE to overcome sin. We need to see what occurs between Adam Trask and his brother Charles and what transpasses between Adam and Kathy to understand Steinbeck's point. No, the acting probably isn't quite as good overall. But the quality of acting cannot overcome the problems of a work that essentially misses the point.

True to the book in all ways.
I'm an E English teacher, and East of Eden is my favorite novel of all time. It's hard to find an adaptation to please me. But this one does! It's a mini series, so longer than a movie. But because of that, it remains absolutely true to the book. The heartbreaking story of two sets of brothers, this is a modern adaptation of the Cain and Able story. Heartbreaking, haunting, and yet uplifting, the novel, and therefore this mini series has the power to change lives.

A great film
I love this movie, it expresses the rebellion of a woman against everything she is expected to do and be. Her character is more than that, she is aware of who she is, the part that is not kind, but ruthless and will those who get in her way. This happens during a time women are not allowed education but kept barefoot and pregnant. It's great film.

Classic Movie and Great to Have on DVD
I am so happy I ordered this and it brought back memories of the popular mini-series days on television a few decades back. This is one of Jane Seymour's greatest performances--unforgettable--so owning this DVD is wonderful. What a classic story! There is a lot to view, so those of us used to binge-watching more modern shows will enjoy dedicating time to this beautiful and well acted story.

Glad I Ordered
I saw an ad for East of Eden from another movie that I purchased. I decided to search for East of Eden because the storyline looked great. It was the VHS version, not DVD. I saved a VHS player because I still have VHS tapes that I do not wish to part with. East of Eden has now joined that club. The packaging was excellent, no issues with the VHS tape at all. It is an older movie so the coloring is not what it is today. However, our family likes to sit and watch movies "of old." I recommend.

BEAUTIFUL CATHY WITH HER HIDDEN EVIL, CHANGES THE TRASK FAMILY'S LIFE FOREVER!
I remember seeing this movie on TV years ago, and once you see this movie you will not forget it! The thing that I could not forget was how mean & evil the beautiful Cathy was, who was played by (Jane Seymour)! Cathy was so mean and wicked, and full of pure evil, she was a she-devil for sure! All she seemed to want to do with her life is to use men, with her beauty, and become a full-fledged prostitute of all things, and she never seemed to love no body but herself! And she was a lousy mother, and a awful wife! I kept thinking as I watched this movie, how could somebody be as beautiful as she is ,and still be so mean! Jane Seymour played this character very well! This story is about the Trask family's generations of brothers, from the Civil War thur the World War I! Parts of the movie will mention the story of how it was with Cain & Abel ,who were also brothers, that are in the Bible, and some of this movie will remind you of parts of their story from the Bible, where Good overcomes Evil, and when Evil overcomes Good! It starts out with half-brothers Adam and Charles Trask! Adam who is the good, and kind brother, is his father's favorite son, whereas Charles is not, so Charles is very jealous of Adam being the favorite! Their father wants Adam to become a soldier, and for Charles to remain on the farm, and be a farmer. Adam does not want to go, but Adam ends up being a soldier, while Charles ends up being a farmer. When Adam comes home from the war, him and Charles become brothers again, and when the beautiful prostitute Cathy ,arrives beaten and bloody and helpless on their door step; here comes BIG trouble for Adam and Charles, their lives will never be the same! This movie will keep you going, you never know what the evil Cathy is going to do next! I really loved the character that Lloyd Bridges played, he was awesome! And I loved Soon Tek Oh's Lee! And my favorite brother was Charles(Bruce Boxleitner), who you find out is not all that bad afterall! And I felt sorry for Adam who did not deserve to be treated so badly, he deserved to be treated so much better!I wished we could have found out what happen to Charles in the movie, after Adam left the farm to go to California! I so loved those emerald green mountains, and those beautiful valleys of California! There was some breathtaking scenery in this movie! I also like the way Adam tried to help his sons, Caleb and Aaron, eventhough he made some of the same mistakes that his father did!

old school movie
If you are a fan of John Steinbeck and especially loved his book East of Eden, you may remember when the series came to television. probably in the mid-80s. While Jane Seymour was excellent as Kathy/Kate, the movie is so old-school that you almost laugh at the acting and scenery and will be turned off. Read the book, listen to it on audio but don't waste your money on this DVD.

Great adaptation, Horrible video transfer
What a shame. This Emmy award winning series was so good but the video is incredibly grainy throughout, with lighting issues. The original broadcast was nothing like this transfer. If u can get past it, this version goes so much more in depth compared to the James Dean version, which itself is good, but incomplete.

I love all sorts of movies
I love all sorts of movies, also old costume dramas. This was a waste of time. I was waiting for the story to become something worthwhile to watch. Did not happen. It's a drag of story about an evil intentioned, spoilt, dreadfully self-centered man hating waif. No idea why this series had to be made.

This is a fantastic story and focuses on how a woman can change ...
This is a fantastic story and focuses on how a woman can change the course of the lives of men by using her wiles and badness. It's told very well and you're kept interested all the way through. I've seen it before and I've also read the book. Well worth watching.

great acting by seymour
Really enjoyed watching this again after so many years. Brilliant acting by Jane Seymour. Its difficult to believe she is so lovely in 'Dr Quinn Medicine Woman', after her super b..ch performance in East of Eden.

Moralistic, heavy and trite
This may be a great novel but it does not make for great entertainment. I found it moralistic, heavy and trite. Would not watch it twice.
