How good is at containing smell and litter?

Not too bad, but it depends on how often you change it.

Could you use a real plant? How much room is there for soil?

Its about 2 cm depth, it does have small holes underneath tho for air flow so I don't know how you would stop water going into the litter tray. Having said that I have had mine in my hall for a few years and people still mistake it for a real plant!

Can this be kept outdoors - or is it indoor only?

As it is made of plastic, it could be used for either, but I think the plastic/artificial fern may become brittle in extreme cold. It is of good quality. I have had mind for 3 years now
