An Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory

I was thinking of joining a book club, but did not feel I had the tools for thinking in depth about literature. I am so enjoying reading this book, and although I have not yet read the whole book, I am getting a lot from it in how to think about different aspects of literature. I studied English literature as an A level about 60 years ago, but with more life experience now, I really appreciate the updated and wide ranging approaches of this book. It is also very readable and an enjoyable experience, which I recommend to others.

It’s been fifty years now since I was last at school. Now retired, I decided to get myself back into some English literature. I’ve deliberately thrown myself into the deep end with this purchase, and it shows. I had to spend the best part of an hour with the lights turned off and a wet tea towel wrapped around my head, just to get through the acknowledgments. I guessing this is aimed at university students, but, oddly enough I am enjoying making my way through this book, parts are slowly starting to make sense.

This book presents a comprehensive overview of key concepts in literary criticism. You can study and reference it easily.

As a college student, I'm always asked to cite an outside source; this book is now my go-to for that. So many theories that can be applied to just about any reading I'm doing. This book is brilliant!
