Honeywell ST9400A1002 1 Day, 2-Channel, 10 W, 24 V

Bought this to replace a very old programmer after re- tiling the kitchen. The back plate looked very similar but was sufficiently different that the new one was needed. The wiring was identical and the backplate fitting was the same. I would have fitted the new one anyway, but I know some people are nervous about wires and electricity. Getting the programmer onto the backplate was very fiddly and it took several attempts to get it on. Tightening the 2 x screws underneath was very awkward too, although that was also true of the old unit. This is why I gave 4 stars for "Ease of Install" The unit came with the time and date already set, it had also been programmed, so it was ready to go. When I got around to checking the programming, I found that the pre installed settings were very sensible and similar to what I would nomally use. Changing the settings was delightfully easy. Move the slider to the required position e.g. CH, after a brief pause the display changes to timer input (2 x ON & OFF). After selecting the start time the programmer moves to the end time etc. Same for HW and time/date. This is by far the easiest and most intuitive setup system I have ever seen on this type of device. The display is bright and clear showing the time during normal use. I am very pleased with this purchase.

The Honeywell ST9400A1002 is a true two channel controller (Hot Water & Central Heating) which is Mains wired (not 24v as described). If the unit is a replacement for another controller which has a standard wiring backplate, then it can be replaced without the need to touch the wiring (Note: TURN OFF THE ELECTRICS TO THE UNIT BEFORE REPLACING) The unit can be programmed for up to 3 On-Off periods in a day (it comes set up for 2 periods). This is ideal for individuals like pensioners who follow the same pattern of use day after day. I have a Combi boiler, and the Hot Water control is wired into the boiler 'Pre Heat' (Tip: with Pre Heat On opening a hot tap for a couple of seconds signals hot water required - give time for the boiler to heat up the Hot Water heat exchange before running off hot water - saves lots of water and gets you hot water quicker, also if the boiler valve is in the Central Heating position it needs time to change over). I set my Hot Water and Central Heating to come on for a couple of hours in the morning, and again in the late afternoon, the Hot Water goes off early evening, and the Central Heating turned off late in the evening. In the Winter the Central Heating is set to Once a day (the Heating being controlled by the room state) - early morning to late at night, the Hot Water remains on its Auto setting. The unit has independent controls to Override the time switch setting (turn On when Off or Off when On) and also Boost to just give 1 - 3 hours extra On time. I have seen on some reviews that people complained that the clock as comes was 5 minutes slow, and they could not reset it. The clock can be reset easy, the problem is the instruction book fails to mention that the controls to do so are under a simple hinged drop down cover on the front of the unit, then follow the instruction book. This is a great controller, and half the price of a 7 day programable unit, Thank you Honeywell.

Works really well and easily. If you don't need different timings on different days of the week then this is for you. Took a bit of time to work out how to remove the previous model but this fits on to the same backplate.

This programmer did not need any rewiring as a replacement for my old Danfoss FP 715 programmer as it uses the same wiring base. It has a manual setting for the time of day should you need it. The cost of the unit is very competitive when compared with other brands.

Fitted a treat

A clear display with a good back-light. Easy to programme and operate. Not much more to say, I hope it proves more reliable than some Honeywell reviews.
