D'Addario Electric Bass Guitar Strings, XL Nickel, EXL170-5, Regular Light Gauge 45-130, Long Scale, 5-String Set, Pack of 1

I recently bought a 35" scale string-through six string bass. I replaced the stock strings with these (plus a C I bought from another manufacturer) and they performed perfectly. They offer clear fundamentals and great feel. I also have these on my string-through 34" scale five (except for the B which I replaced with a .125) and they work just as well. Great all-around set.

These are stings I feel you're not supposed to like. Thing is, I keep coming back to them. They are everywhere and they are inexpensive compared to other comparable strings. They feel good, you know what they will sound like and about how long they will last for you. I am using the balanced tension 4 string set on my Spector LX4, they are fantastic. The strings I just bought here on Amazon are the XL170 5 string set for my Spector LX5. That bass is 35 scale and the normal "long scale" strings fit as they should. They are also great, but if I had one criticism it's the B and E string gauge. Most sets in this range are .105 for E and .125 or .130 for B. Here you get .100 for E and .130 for the B. It seems an odd jump and I suspect it has to do with keeping a tight sounding B while attempting to balance tension across the set. That's probably good on a 34 scale bass, but it would be cool to offer a more traditional .105 and .125 set if you have a 35 scale. In any case, it's not somthign that I'm conscious of when playing, just a bit of OCD and the B does rock at .130, but it also does for any strings I've tried at .125 on the 35 scale. Maybe something for 5 string similar to the balanced tension set offered for 4 string. That set has the E string at .107. That may pair pretty well with a .130 B.

I’ve played bass for 11 years and these are my go-to strings. I’m a big fan round wound strings. These give you a nice medium-bright tone that is super versatile - sounds great in pretty much any genre. They feel great too. Overall definitely worth trying these out if you’re on the hunt for a solid set of strings.

Great strings and fast delivery!

Revising my review. I bought this set of strings for a 5 string bass, but when I opened the package, it looked like only 4 strings were inside. And the packaging is confusing because on one side of the pouch it shows a diagram of 6 string sizes, but it has a bracket around 4 of them and it says "standard 4 string set". So I thought I only got 4 strings, even though the imprint on the opposite side of the bag had the code for a 5 string set. I ended up returning them for exchange. So, the replacement came, and it was exactly the same, and I thought, "no way this can happen twice in a row!" Upon looking more closely, it turns out that the two smallest strings (D and G strings) were both wrapped into one coil, together. So all is good. One star off for confusing packaging that threw off this new student bass player!
