Life is Strange: Before the Storm serves as the prequel to the original Life is Strange, but this time around you play as a younger Chloe rather than Max and are being shown what was happening a few years prior to the original game. This seems a bit daunting at first as being a prequel means that the plot is locked in for a lot of things and anyone who has played the original game already knows the fate of many of these characters - not least Rachel Amber, who is very important here - and so Deck Nine did have their hands tied in terms of what to do with the overarching plot. To their credit, though, they did manage to pull it off.. for the most part. See, the story is actually pretty good. It's not as good as Life is Strange, especially because there's no mystery about things like the storm, but it's still generally competent in showing you what Chloe was doing in this part of her life as well as her budding relationship with Rachel Amber. Admittedly it feels like the stakes are much lower here compared to the first game, but it still held my attention and the majority of what was happening was interesting enough, especially since you still get to make quite a few story choices that can play out differently, and that most of the endings of each episode did leave me wanting more. The one significant issue here is the pacing as each episode does tend to be quite long - hella long, if you will - and there are too many parts where it does drag. I'm not joking when I say that a decent chunk of your playtime will include things like two lots of playing a board game or fixing a car. Most of what you'll do though is largely just talking to people, observing items, and making dialogue choices as you would expect, but instead of powers there's a fun backtalk minigame where you can successfully bend people to your will as long as you make the right choices in what to say. The collectibles this time around have also been changed as you're no longer taking pictures but are instead going around doing graffiti, which does fit Chloe very well, and here again if you do happen to miss any you can use the very helpful collectible mode to take a look around and find them. Visually Before the Storm follows the same pattern as the first game with a unique art style rather than photorealism and it typically works with what they're going for, although the lip syncing is once again a letdown. The voice acting meanwhile is generally well done for most of the characters, with the notable exception of Rachel's monotone parents, while the dialogue options are also well worked, and like the first game there is an abundance of music which is generally good and fits in well with the game. I did have some minor niggles however, like the flashback in the beginning of both the second and third episodes being generic clips instead of showing the version of Chloe I had controlled with the correct clothes, and in the third episode I had an odd freeze that necessitated a restart, so BTS did come off as needing a bit more polish. On the whole though Life is Strange: Before the Storm is still a good game, even if it doesn't quite reach the heights of the original. This one just about scrapes four stars.

So, stepping into Before the Storm as someone who’s played plenty of narrative games, I went in cautious—with the original Life Is Strange being such a high bar. But Deck Nine manages to pull off a pretty strong prequel. You’re playing as Chloe before Max’s return, and there’s no time-rewind mechanic this time. Instead, you're getting Backtalk sequences and sharp dialogue choices, which works well most of the time—though sometimes it feels like the “right answer” is too obvious or the stakes are artificially ramped. The emotional center between Chloe and Rachel carries the game: both characters are voiced passionately and feel layered, especially when things go off the rails. The story’s pacing skips a bit (Episode 3 is weaker than the first two) but the finale lands hard. Visually it’s gorgeous in that indie, painterly style, though you do notice a few rough edges and lighting inconsistencies. If you like character-driven stories and are ok with fewer gameplay mechanics, this one’s a rewarding ride—even if it doesn’t quite eclipse its predecessor.
