This mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by László Krasznahorkai, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown time in an unnamed village, where, one day, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens that builds inexorably toward violence. In thirty-nine hypnotic long takes engraved in ghostly black and white, auteur Béla Tarr and codirector-editor Ágnes Hranitzky conjure an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty.DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Béla Tarr, with uncompressed monaural soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special featuresFamily Nest (1979), Tarr’s first feature filmNew interview with Tarr by film critic Scott FoundasTrailerNew English subtitle translationPLUS: An essay by film programmer and critic Dennis Lim Review: Wow - This is a truly genius film. Beautiful and quiet. The main character actor was so quiet and restrained. It was nice that the booklet folded out into a poster. I tried to get everyone I know to see this. Review: Beautiful haunting masterpiece - I actually bought this simply based on its reputation (and it happened to be on sale) and it definitely deserves all the accolades it’s gotten. One of the most haunting otherworldly films I’ve ever seen! I’m proud to have it in my collection and I know I’ll come back to it many times in the future.

Beautiful haunting masterpiece

One of the best films by Tarr.
Worth buying and watching again overtime. A masterpiece and fable for our troubled times.

Alllrighty Then
Some friend of mine said this was a great film. I disagree. It was perpetually bleak, and I kept waiting for it to go somewhere to no avail

Beautiful transfer to 4K.
If you bought this you probably already know what a great film this is. The transfer is top notch and kudos to Criterion for a great job.

Runs on
It was different. Scenes were super loooong. Like why is the camera on this guy his ENTIRE walk through the village? EVERY TIME HE WALKS THROUGH THE VILLAGE. I would see him start to walk through the village and that became my cue to go take a bathroom break. I know, art.

Tarr’s most accessible film, maybe!
Bela Tarr is a master filmmaker, Werckmeister Harmonies may be his greatest film, that should be enough information. But of course it isn’t, the films Tarr made before his unfortunate retirement, raise questions, of length and style, so it becomes necessary to address those points, as well as the quality of the disc. The latter point is easiest to answer, it is well up to Criterion’s usual standards. The film is the most accessible of the later works, also including Damnation, Satantango, Man From London and Turin Horse, the long takes, beyond at times what feels comfortable, are present and the music from Mihaily Vig perhaps reaches its peak here. To cut a long story short the disc is brilliant and the film is deeply human and moving. The world would be a little better if everyone watched it and took it to heart.
