WORKS A TREAT
Having tolerated several very blunt knives for too long, and failing to sharpen them successfully using a sharpening stone, I decided to look around for alternatives. There followed several weeks of looking at reviews for rolling knife sharpeners, ranging from the ridiculously expensive Horl, down to the cheap Chinese knock-offs. Reviews were not good for the cheap ones, saying they do not roll freely and the magnets are weak, which is dangerous. I settled on the HONE as I liked the reviews and liked the idea of it being made somewhere other than China. I am so glad I bought one. First impressions: the roller is heavy and feels high quality and the ball bearings mean it rolls freely with no resistance or skidding. Although I have not used any other makes, from the pictures, it does appear that the barrel is also longer than other makes, allowing you to keep your hand well away from the upturned edge of the knife; a safety plus. The magnets are super strong, and quite some effort is required to separate the knife from the block; another safety plus. The discs are removeable and reversible, so you have twice the life and can replace them if they wear out, again, a feature not found on the cheaper knock-offs. My knives were very blunt so I gave them 100 passes on each side and with each of the two discs (Course and fine), that's 400 passes total. It took about 10 minutes per knife but by the end each knife passed the paper and ripe tomato tests. My knives are Santoku Damascus steel so very hard, yet the HONE brought them up to a very sharp condition. A 2nd sharpening some 2 weeks later and they are even sharper. These rolling sharpeners take the guesswork out of knife sharpening and at £100, the HONE is probably towards the pricier end of the market but worth every penny in my view.

An excellent knife sharpener.
I’ve always struggled to sharpen my kitchen knives and over the years I’ve tried many different methods. I found sharpening by hand using whetstones too difficult to get consistent results, the Lansky method too laborious, and pull through and electric sharpeners not good enough. So I thought I’d give a rolling sharpener a go and decided to try the Hone. It’s just perfect for me. It’s easy to use, sharpens quickly and efficiently to an excellent level of sharpness. Certainly more than adequate for my needs. A great piece of kit. If your looking at a method/tool to sharpen your kitchen knives to a high standard - don’t hesitate to consider the Hone sharpener.

Great product...
Great product After much frustration with various knife sharpeners, i undertook a lot of research into "rollers". There are loads of cheap knock offs and the expensive original Horl (Germany). Having looked at many Youtubes, the Hone systems looked best in class and although not cheap, it is a good price point. I have rated it 4 not 5, in truth 4.5 would be better. The magnets great and hold knife in correct angle, making it really easy to get it right. Plus point - it holds short and long knives in two different slots. If your knives are blunt - really important to follow the three steps: coarse disc > fine > super fine (ceramic 3000). I found it easy to get sharp. But I'm struggling with "razor sharp" - you see the videos of slicing paper held in fingers. I asked for the ceramic 3000 disc to go with the standard model to see if could improve. (This was sent FOC, just posting). In my view - the ceramic should be part bundle with all units! Rather than focus on the number of passes, I found it much easier to listen to the sound. First pass is very scratchy.....then it gets smooth when you get onto the ceramic - it quickly loses sound and glides almost like going through butter. Been in contact with Hone customer services (excellent - reply to emails quickly and professionally). They say the ceramic should give razor-sharp cut through paper. I'm still not sure. Many sites insist this is a down to the quality of steel and the final use of a leather strop. At some stage I buy a strop and test. For now, happy just to have sharp knives. Overall is the Hone worth the investment? If you have lots of knives and you want something that is easy and frankly almost foolproof - this is the tool. If you want razor-sharp - You might still need to use a leather strop.

Fast, very effective and easy to use.
Had bought a cheaper version earlier which was OK, but it took ages to make knives sharp. There had to be a better way - but not at the BMW price of the German market leader, Not prepared to pay that. So I took a bit of a chance on the Hone at under half the price and it paid off. Excellent product that works fast, efficiently and is really easy to use. The base unit is particularly well designed with with two angles (15 and 20 degrees) but four sides - two being specifically designed to support smaller knives, with the usual two for larger knives. Magnets are well positioned and reassuringly strong. Double-sided high-quality rotating diamond honing plates also make for a very cost-effective product. Rate this product very highly indeed.

A great knife sharpener.
Bought April '25 for £49.00 which included a 29% discount. After trying to sharpen knives by using other methods and getting inconsistent results, I decided to try using this system by Hone. This is so easy to use and the results are great. Hone have included some unique design features that other systems don't have. Easily reversible double sided discs held in place by magnets, metal bearings (which have protected covers, unlike in the photo) that give the roller added weight, long lasting and a smooth operation. The block holds the knives in place securely using two strong magnets on each side and two sides designed to hold smaller knives such as paring and even pocket knives and doesn't move when using the roller. It even has a groove on top to park the roller when not in use. Overall I'm impressed with design, quality, ease of use and the end results.

HORL quality without the HORL price
I was warned to avoid rolling sharpeners unless I was ready to shell out for a HORL. While HORL is the original and highly regarded in this space, it's also extremely expensive. So I went down the rabbit hole--YouTube videos, online reviews, deep Amazon dives--looking for a worthy alternative that wouldn't break the bank. That's when I came across HONE, a Canadian brand. Most of the lower-priced rolling sharpeners get slammed for weak magnets, poor construction, or cheap sharpening discs. HONE has none of these issues. Build quality is solid, the magnets are strong and reliable, and the sharpening discs feel premium. One feature I use all the time is the small knife pocket on the magnetic base--it holds little blades securely and makes sharpening them easy. I genuinely couldn't be happier with my purchase. All my knives are sharp again, and now I look for excuses to chop things.

Look no further, this is the real deal.
Received my Hone Rolling Sharpener today and it was immediately obvious that this is equipment of a very high quality. It is reassuringly heavy but the roller bearings make operation a smooth and easy. I am very particular about my kitchen knives and I've been looking for an effective sharpener for some time. I tried the electric belt (Ken Onions) but that left scratches on the blades, I tried the angled whetstone type but apart from the clamp being useless all it did was make a huge amount of stone dust. I used this rolling sharpener on an old kitchen chefs knife that had been neglected and within 10 minutes the edge had been restored and it's now back in the knife rack! The process takes a little time and you must remember how many stroke you give each side to maintain the centre point, but it really very simple. The magnets in the base are more than adequate to hold both small paring knives and large Nakiri knives without slipping. The acid test was when it came to using it on my Damascus steel knives, I was hesitant at first but I didn't need to have worried, wickedly sharp edges without any scratches. Shame that Amazon don't seem to stock alternative discs, ceramic in particular, looks like you have to purchase from Hone website.
