Love Story

Love Story by Eric Segal
One of the best tear jerker romantic movies ever. I remember seeing this at the movie theatre when I was like 19. I think everyone wanted to go to Harvard after seeing this movie. Ryan O'Neal was a hunk back then as Oliver Barrett - first saw Ryan O'Neal in the soap opera at night - Peyton Place with Mia Farrow, Christopher Connelly and Barbara Parkins. He then went on after Love Story fame, and starred with Barbra Streisand in the Main Event and What's Up Doc. Ali McGraw really made wearing the collegiate style more famous for women; she was the epitome' of what every young woman wanted to look like and dress hoping they too would get a Harvard man if they hung around the campus of any great ivy league school. Both Ryan and Ali stayed friends through the years, until Ryan O'Neal died in 2023 to be with his one love, Farrah Fawcett. Good movie, good acting and a good book by Eric Segal.

If you like Love Story to begin with, you'll probably love this release
Love Story was THE tear-jerker of 1970-71, an enormously popular film I saw with my teen friends a few months after its release, and that we giggled at while adult ladies were pulling out their hankies and tissue only 10 minutes into the first reel. Obviously, they had seen Love Story before, and however many times they'd seen it since the first, the movie still affected them so much that tears flowed freely before Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) and Jenny (Ali MacGraw) could even meet. For decades, I never bothered to see Love Story again. Then I decided to give it another chance when we still had video rental stores. I thought it was awful, but I perversely enjoyed it. There was something so innocent and earnest about it, and there was real chemistry between O'Neal and MacGraw (who I like as an actor, particularly in the Getaway with Steve McQueen). If you haven't seen Love Story, it would probably be wise to give a look on Prime Video or some streaming service before buying. If you already like it, then Paramount's 50th anniversary 4K blu-ray release is a good purchase. I had the old DVD, which looked pretty washed out and uninteresting. This newly restored blu-ray brings out some surprising visual quality—surprising because I don't remember the movie looking particularly impressive on the big screen when I saw it eons ago.Overall, a nice presentation of a movie that is somewhat historic (for its initial effect & popularity) and very much a time capsule of its day. For sensitive ears, be aware there is some foul language, as Jenny is a "spitfire" of sorts, a wry observer of life from the RI working class—and of course, we all curse like crazy in RI. (Or used to.)

Free-Spirited, Funny, but Tragic
***** This review contains spoilers. Love Story (1970) stars Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal as a free-spirited couple that goes through trials and tribulations (Oliver's poor relationship with his demanding father, and Jennifer's fatal illness), but their love for each other is eternal. While watching this movie, I could just feel the intensity of each scene, as if it's so real, rather than the sometimes unrealistic love that is found in some Hollywood movies. Ali MacGraw gives the performance of a lifetime as a sharp-tongued vivacious and very comical young woman, and carries this throughout the whole film, as if nothing can crush her spirit. This movie has a tragic ending, which makes the average person want a happy ending (due to the loveability of Jennifer), but if that somehow happened, this movie wouldn't be half the movie it is. In a sense, we the audience have to get on board when it comes to the sad ending and endure the frustration if we are to appreciate what a true love story is really about. Casting MacGraw was the perfect choice, as well as O'Neal; they seem to have the perfect chemistry on screen. The prevailing message of "love means never having to say you're sorry" is very powerful here, and used perfectly. The special features are good, too. Love Story is one of the greatest movies of all time, and certainly in my top 10.
