Sensitively brilliant
As complete recording of Impromptus, this is definitely among the finest. I like, not only the breath taking subtlety of tones, but also the strong and masculine playing of younger Perahia, especially with relatively loud left-hand part adding almost orchestral grandeur to each piece. The famous G flat Impromptu is most beautifully played in just right tempo. I like the mesmerizing effect he creates by letting the melody line gently float on the arpeggios or at times sink into them only to emerge again, while most of other pianists treat the music as 'song without words' completely separating the melody from the harmony. This interpretation of the piece is second only to the miraculously fragile account by Horowitz.
