You've read the book, you've seen the movie - Now forget all of it!
If you're a Baum-only Oz fan like me, you will not enjoy these books. Even setting the movie aside, these books throw everything into disarray. The first book, Wicked, deals with Elphaba, aka The Wicked Witch of the West, a girl with an unfortunate birth defect who just wants to be left alone and introduces the magic dingus that the whole series revolves around. The second book, Son of a Witch, relates the life of Liir, who may or may not be Elphaba's son, and wants no part of his rumored legacy, even as he "keeps getting pulled back in". The third book, A Lion Among Men, relates the story of Brrr, aka The Cowardly Lion This is probably the time to mention that in Maguire's Oz, not all animals talk, and the Animals have become outcasts during the time of the Wizard. It's the weakest of the four books, as Brrr is one of those "pinballs" that fate keeps bouncing around. The final book, Out of Oz, brings Dorothy back to cause more chaos in Oz (she's actually convicted of the murder of the Wicked Witches!) and the war against the rebellious Munhckins comes to a disastrous end as The Emerald City is about to fall to the Munchkins, until an attempt to remove a spell from from Liir is both successful and disastrous. The denouement leaves a large number of questions. For example, the war is over, but who won? A fantastic series in terms of story, but not for those who rely on L. Frank Baum's books as the history of Oz.

Nice
I bought this for my wife as a Christmas present and she’s already discovered it and she loves it!

Twisted and wonderful
Politics run throughout the series but don't bore you to death. There is less of Dorothy and Toto which I found refreshing. This is a great series and extremely fun to read.

I love this book with all my heart <3
I can't go into depth about the book but I love this book so much and it is such a classic. Every aspect of the story-line is just gripping and interesting and the tone is just unique in all it's glory. MY children will read this book one day, especially my daughter and I hope they take something from such a great series just as I have...

A Bit Overwhelming
The first book in the series was good. I enjoyed reading about Elphaba's beginnings. At time the book seemed rushed and other times to drag on with infinite details. The other three books in the series had their good points, but at times seemed to be rambling. In the end you are still left with a lot of questions and the feeling of "Wow, I just spent a lot of time reading a series and it lead to nowhere."I did not put the series down because I kept hoping it would get better, but in the end I was disappointed.

So far so good!
I had already owned and read Wicked. Once I got my new kindle I had to buy the set! I didn't care for the added "Wizard of Oz" story added between "Wicked" and "Son of a Witch" so I personally skipped reading that (I believe Amazon threw it in the bundle (???).) Either way I'm almost finished with "Son of a Witch" and everything I've read up through has been great. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a new take on other stories! And with that I'm off to attempt to finish this wonderful series!
